The John Edwards campaign appears to be in bunker mode over the big blogger controversy. Staffers aren't answering phone calls and emails. The statement on this whole dust-up promised to Salon earlier today has yet to materialize.
Meanwhile, the Edwards camp is under blogospheric siege from some quarters. Chris Bowers of MyDD is threatening not to support Edwards if the two bloggers are fired. He writes:
While there is no way I will support Edwards with Amanda and Melissa...fired, I will immediately become a staunch Edwards supporter if they are not fired. Consider the heinous reporting that is being done in this story, where bigot William Donahue is somehow an authority on what defines hate speech, it is clear that the Edwards campaign will take a lot of flack from outside the netroots if they do not fire Amanda and Melissa. Keeping them on would show a willingness to take risks and stand up to the media in a way that most Democrats just are not, all because the campaign will be doing so in order to defend the netroots.
If someone is willing to stand with us, that should mean something big, and should not go unrewarded.
More as we learn it.
Update: Crooks and Liars has video of a CNN segment on this. First the Times covers it, now CNN. This is really snowballing.
I'd like to see John Edwards keep the bloggers, get the nomination, then explain his position on the Mohammad cartoons and why it's wrong to attack religious beliefs. Could be very entertaining, especially in states with a large Catholic population.
I just think the whole thing is funny. The democrats created their leftist monster and now it's attacking them.
The "anti-Catholic" and "anti-Christian" statements aren't all that anti-Catholic or anti-Christian. Flip around the one on abortion and it shows that the libs actually kow they are aborting their future constituents. It does, however, show the character of the people surrounding Edwards. They shouldn't be fired, they should be exposed... after he gets the nomination... so we can put another pro-life Republican in office.
Just more free PR for the DNC... by January 2008, nobody will remember these two.
ping.

I've got to borrow from Joan Swirsky's excellent article, The Pathology of Liberalism:
snips:
Liberals entertain the conceit that they are quite evolved and superior, both morally and intellectually. In their childlike minds, they are good and the people who set limits, demand accountability, expect empirical results, fight their enemies and also make judgments about what is good and bad and right and wrong are bad.
But Rabbi Aryeh Spero says that liberals are morally inferior, given their lack of heartache over what grieves normal people the actual torture of our soldiers, the real beheadings, the tearing of Israelis limb by limb, and the burning and dragging of American, British, and Israeli half-dead. Their silence shows their amorality; their selectivity proves their concern is not with human dignity but tarnishing their countrys image. He calls this thinking a psychological aberration.
Chris Bowers believes the "way of the bloggers" is pernicious hate speech, and that they should support people who stand for such speech.
I hope that catches on amongst all the democrat candidates.
Referring to the Holy Spirit as a "white, sticky, load" deposited in the Virgin Mary is offensive to any Christian.
One of the local TV stations in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill was using a teaser about this story, but I never saw it appear.
What's going to piss of the leftwing blogosphere even more is that Edwards now has a conservative blogger on his site called Jimbo.
I was referring to what was reported on the CNN Video clip. I am guilty of not doing my homework. That is really offensive, as well as indicates an ignorance to Jesus' conception per scripture. At any rate, let the dude hire these people and then broadcast it. Any Christians or Catholics who were going to vote for him won't change their minds anyhow. Let's see if the Catholic Church will become active and united in 08.
Statement on Campaign BloggersWhen the choice was between stupid and coward, John picked stupid. The tone and the sentiment of some of Amanda Marcotte's and Melissa McEwan's posts personally offended me. It's not how I talk to people, and it's not how I expect the people who work for me to talk to people. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that kind of intolerant language will not be permitted from anyone on my campaign, whether it's intended as satire, humor, or anything else. But I also believe in giving everyone a fair shake. I've talked to Amanda and Melissa; they have both assured me that it was never their intention to malign anyone's faith, and I take them at their word. We're beginning a great debate about the future of our country, and we can't let it be hijacked. It will take discipline, focus, and courage to build the America we believe in.
