If you take a look at weapons development (say in the last 100 years) you find it's much better to have a 90% effective weapon and the will to use it, than to wait for perfection. Unreasonable demands are being made when we should be fielding weapons systems, getting experience and fixing problems.

Agreed. The best test for any weapon, the ultimate test, is how it performs in combat. The M16 started out as a cheaply made, unreliable firearm. But with refinement from battlefield experience it has become one of the best military rifles in the world.
