According to the article, a volunteer called a local Wal-Mart, on his own, and used Edwards' name. Ah, the old "throw the volunteer under the bus" ploy. Plausible deniability and all that.

Wal-Mart takes this information and turns it into a national smear. . . . Let's see now, Dave Johnson, that's SIX times you've used the word "smear" in just the few sentences PJ has quoted. Do you figure if you say it enough times that will make it true?
To: BunnySlippers
Swiftboated by Wal-Mart! Well, since the swiftboaters were people who knew the truth and stepped forward despite the endless personal attacks they had to endure and speak truth to power...well, guess it does sound like Edwards was swiftboated...it's just that democrats don't know what swiftboating really means.

What right does a corporation have. . . ? And you throw in "corporation" a lot, too, since I guess that's a "boo-hiss" word.
To: PJ-Comix
Is this a company that ought to have its right to operate examined, or what? Oooh, a not-so-veiled threat and attempt at intimidation!
BAD Wal-Mart, BAD!
To: PJ-Comix
Edawards was suppsoedly going to announce within the next couple of weeks. As soon as he finishes fixing his hair.
To: highlander_UW
They see it as having their well laid plans torpedoed.

"While the rest of America's working families are waiting patiently in line, Sen. Edwards wants to cut to the front," the Wal-Mart statement said."Hey lurking DUmmies! Is this what the two Americas is all about??
To: PJ-Comix
so they come out with this stuff. Which Edwards himself GAVE them when he sought special favors because he's rich and powerful!

i would publisize this behavior on the front page of every news paper in the country ad take adds out on every media network available. Somehow I think that Edwards would rather have this story just go away, since it reflects much worse on him than it does on Wal-Mart.
To: Darkwolf377
Yes I do. But what I meant was, it's clear what the watershed moments were for Kerry's and Edwards' elimination. I'm not aware of such a moment for Gore. He's still in the running.
To: billybudd
No, he's not, and his watershed moment was An Inconvenient Truth, which made him a god among the Michael Moore crowd, bombed bigtime, and labelled him as another lefty kook for everyone else--like those who put conservative democrats in power last election day.

Well, my first thought is that his staffer was trying to snag one for himself and used Edwards' name to get it. Yeah, that's it, blame the "staffer" (i.e., the unpaid, cheap [i.e., free] labor).
To: PJ-Comix
John Edwards has the money to buy a PS3. . . . John Edwards has the money to buy the QE2.

I cannot see him risking his future for a freaking video game. John Edwards did not want anyone else seeing him either.

So...wait...Edwards can criticize Walmart and ask them for special treatment, but Walmart can't criticize John Edwards? That's rich. So is John Edwards. Rich and powerful.
Which of the "Two Americas" do you think he lives in? Not the one that stands in lines.

Hey, Chuck...
We might find the Pony staffer at the 24-hour Wal-Mart in Manchester (or St. Peters) trying to snag that PS3...
