They have to face the reality that if they truly believe that Islam is "beautiful, tolerant religion that respects humanity" that this MUST mean separation of church and state. No religious political parties. No preaching of politics in the mosque. No religious leader telling their followers how to vote. It must be the state that provides the social services, law enforcement, etc.

Therein lies the rub, as they say, because with Islam, the religion IS the state. There is no separation between the two because according to Islam, Allah is ruler over all things, and everything that is done must be done within the will of Allah, interpreted, of course, by the clerics.

It would help if Iraq were a country instead of a bunch of religious tribes.

Here are some other videos of this guy. All are from MEMRI (memritv.org)
This shiite cleric got it right. Since he is an Iraqi MP he must have some following. Let's hope that more people like him show up.

Iyad Jamal Al-Din advocates secularism and slams theocracy (Abu Dhabi TV):

Iyad Jamal Al-Din slams Iran:

Iyad Jamal Al-Din defends Israel, slams Arabs and backward Islam:

Iyad Jamal Al-Din slams Arab Muslim backwardness, defends "Zionists, Crusaders" (argueing with Sunni pot-hat):

Gotta love this man! I hope he stays safe. God bless him.

I heard he was a Shiite, but he praises the Sufi branch of Islam, where are found the most laidback and tolerant Muslims of all (I met them in Uzbekistan, it's really true). But sugggesting that adopting Sufi ways might be the way to do things is no ticket to longevity in wildly sectarian Iraq.

Just the same, he's one brave SOB!

I am not talking about the beautiful, tolerant, Islamic religion, which respects humanity. But there is an Arab Islamic culture,

The worst parts of Islam are direct from the pre-Islamic Arabic culture. Of course Mo himself was one of those pre-Islamic Arabs. He got more, rather than less, Arabic as he gained power and influence.

Exactly. Within the non-arabic Islamic countries (notably Iran ,but also Turkey etc.) the positive traditions/culture is everything non-arabic. The pre-archaic Arab ideas were imported with Islam (of course troubling enough), which destroyed the advanced cultures in the Middle East.
