WASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. Mark Foley's campaign Thursday called the disclosure of a series of e-mails between the congressman and a 16-year-old former congressional page a "political attack and ... the worst kind of character assassination."

But the campaign of Foley's challenger, Democrat Tim Mahoney, denied he was behind the release of the e-mails and said the issue should be "a matter for the appropriate authorities to investigate."
