While I can't say anything about Alabama, having grown up in NYC, I can say for sure it was used a heck of a lot more there than it is used in the part of Virginia I now live in.

I don't doubt it a bit. An elderly black woman that my mother worked with for years once told me about racism in the south as opposed to racism in the north.

She said that southern racism was open and easier to deal with. In the north racism took the form of people embracing blacks because the embracer believed that blacks couldn't do anything for themselves.
