Danny Glover's new best friend has other devils on his mind besides George Bush.
In a little noticed speech in Tehran last month, at the height of the Israel-Hezbollah war, Hugo Chavez, standing next to his new best friend, Holocaust-denier Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, wondered if Israelis, "want war because they have the devil inside them."
"I say to them from here, from Iran, once and a thousand times: Murderers! Cowards! Frankly, their fate has been sealed, from the depths of the people's soul ... "I would say today: 'God, throw the lightning bolts at the monsters.' Inshallah ."
Applause all around.
Few in the U.S. seemed to pay any heed to the remarks, with the exception of Washington Post columnist Jackson Diehl. "No one seemed to care about the hate speech of the president of a large South American country and one of the world's biggest oil exporters -- a man who has been conducting a frenetic campaign to win his government a two-year term on the United Nations Security Council," Diehl wrote.
As Chavez has ratcheted up his rhetoric against Israel, Jews in Venezuela have noticed a distinct rise in what they say is government-fueled antisemitism there.
