Captain Ed looks at it from them vs. us perspective... but when you boil it down... it wasn't. It was Centanni sacrificing his faith... for his life.
I don't know if the two were Christians either. If they weren't, their conduct wouldn't surprise anybody.
But anybody who professed to be a Christian? Whole other story.
Mt 10:33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
I am a professing Christian. But if I were in a scenario where an Islamic thug was threatening to kill me if I didn't renounce Jesus Christ and worship Allah, I have to confess, I would probably resist not because I am guaranteed eternity because of the truth of the Gospel and the promises of God, the highest and noble expression of that resistance.
I'd do it just to PO the thugs.
That's just me, though.
No, In all due respect, I think you're wrong. IF Steve was NOT a Christian in the first place, he wouldn't know anything about denying Christ. It's pretty obvious that he was not or else he wouldn't have wondered if he was really a Muslim after his forced conversion.
Suppose this whole event made him realize that he needs God, and he becomes a Christian. Wouldn't that give him a tremendous Testimony to the saving Grace of the Lord? We already know that they wanted to kill Steve, but they didn't. I don't think anyone knows more than Steve does just how close he came to dying. Not many people who are kidnapped by these animals ever come back alive. He's definitely got a story to tell. I would imagine he did a lot of crying out to God and prayed non stop until his release. :o)
