Will Blogger.com (BlogSpot.Com) Allow UNIQUE URLs In The Future?
Self | August 14, 2006 | PJ-Comix

I have a question about Blogger.Com (aka BlogSpot.Com). When will they allow us to have URLs there that don't include BlogSpot in the address? I have registered DUmmieFUnnies.Com and would like to change my URL there to that. I know that Angelfire used to allow you UNIQUE URLs sans "Angelfire" in the URL so I am wondering if BlogSpot will also allow this for a fee. It seems like it would be in their interest to do so. First of all they would earn extra fees for doing so PLUS it would keep people from removing their Blogs from the BlogSpot site.

TOPICS: Computers/Internet
KEYWORDS: bloggercom; blogspotcom; url
Thanx in advance for any info on this subject.

Even if they don't, you could still have the DUmmieFUnnies.com domain read files and folders from your blogspot site. Not a very good solution, I know, but doable.

I used to have a free website for my band using 'Dreamwater.com', which, as you pointed out, is very long and made it tough to put on a business card.

I purchased a website name that cost me $8.50 a year which allowed me to 'point' to Dreamwater. Anyone looking up the band name (Ransom BTW) only had to put www.ransom.com or just 'ransom.com' to be taken to the DreamWater website.

Worked real well, until I discontinued the site.

You mean via FTP? I would prefer that BlogSpot offer this service so that anybody going to the old (which means the current BlogSpot URL that I am now using) would be automatically forwarded to the new URL sans "BlogSpot" in the address. This seems like a natural thing for them to do. Angelfire offers unique personalized URLs for a fee. This would be a great way for BlogSpot to earn extra $$$.

It would be easier for me to just continue posting on BlogSpot. I like their tools and AUTOMATIC archiving. If Angelfire offers UNIQUE URLs, I don't know why BlogSpot can't. Seems like a natural.

It's been a while since I've messed with DNS and Domain naming, but IIRC, what you should be able to do is set it up such that someone types in DUmmieFUnnies.com and gets your blogspot site, without the blogspot URL showing up in the address bar. I once worked for a company that had a website but two or three domain names. I could type in any of those domain names and load the same HTML pages from the same server, but still had the domain I typed in the address bar remain (ie, it didn't redirect to our primary domain name if I typed in one of the secondary domains to get to the website).

In this way, you can still use blogspot's tools, but have your own domain name linking to your weblog.

I'm eating lunch with a guy in about an hour that owns his own web design business. I'll ask him about it and see what he says.

"t would be easier for me to just continue posting on BlogSpot."

Understandable. I did continue using DreamWater with the 'ransom.com' address linked to it. I didn't change anything else I was doing.

Yes, found out any info you can on this. I would like to REMAIN with BlogSpot since I really do like their tools which makes Blogging easy. However, I would also like a UNIQUE URL sans the BlogSpot name and would be willing to pay for this. Why they don't already provide this OBVIOUS service is beyond me.

They probably feel that the advertising (getting blogspot's name out there) is worth more than your money. And yeah, it's kind of cheap.

I think it's RIDICULOUS that they don't provide URLs. The extra advertising they get is OFFSET by the Blogs that LEAVE BlogSpot so they could have unique URLs.

Indeed. I started using WordPress and purchased my own hosting. Only costs 10 dollars a year. Haven't had time to blog in a few months, but still...

I've already registered DUmmieFUnnies.Com but haven't done anything with it since I like using the BlogSpot tools. Now if only BlogSpot would allow unique URLs sans "BlogSpot" in the address...

Google owns BlogSpot now. Is there any way to contact the folks in charge of Google about this topic?

One reason why I really want a unique URL is that I want to print up a bunch of DUmmie FUnnies T-Shirts with DUmmieFUnnies.Com printed on them. I can't do this with that BlogSpot address. The T-Shirts are great advertising for the Blog but I need to REMOVE "BlogSpot" from the address.

Possibly. Blogspot's site will probably have a "Contact Us" kind of thing on it somewhere. You might try that.

I'll check it out. I'm just AMAZED that they don't provide this service. When I first started the DUmmie FUnnies I figured I see if it would take off and if it did, I would get my own unique URL. Well, things did work out but I was SHOCKED that they didn't provide this type of upgrade service. It just seems so counterproductive on their part. I bet they are losing a lot of blogs because of this.
