The death of Major Paeta Hess-von-Kruedener, the Canadian soldier killed in Lebanon while serving with UN Peacekeepers in that country, has become a political bonus for Kofi Annan, who it appears, would stoop to any depth just to make Israel look bad. As the father of a Canadian soldier, I am deeply saddened that one of our own has been lost in this incessant conflict, but I am dismayed that Annan and Israels enemies would use this death to garner some political advantage.

The UN observers should've been evacuated when hostilities began. The fact that it was known to the UN higher ups that Hezbollah was using the post as cover should've triggered an immediate evacuation of UN personnel.
Either the lack of common sense was intentional or it was extreme incompetence. WIth the UN it is difficult to tell the difference between intent and incompetence, but it looks increasingly like the UN observers were sacrificed to make Israel look bad.
One unarmed UN military observer, a member of the Observer Group Lebanon (OGL), was seriously wounded by small arms fire in the patrol base in the Marun Al Ras area yesterday afternoon. According to preliminary reports, the fire originated from the Hezbollah side during an exchange with the IDF. He was evacuated by the UN to the Israeli side, from where he was taken by an IDF ambulance helicopter to a hospital in Haifa. He was operated on, and his condition is now reported as stable.

The UN should've gotten the unarmed observers out of there. They were there to observe a cease-fire. Once that cease fire no longer existed, there was no longer a position for observers.
I have friends who are leaving soon, for Afghanistan. It sounds bad to say this, but if something were to happen to them, I'd rather they be in a place like Afghanistan, and FULLY ARMED. In my opinion, dying as an unarmed observer, like a sitting duck, with little or no way to defend yourself, is no way for a soldier to die. The Major sent his e-mail to CTV News July 18---I wonder if he really thought the media would be smart enough to figure out what he was trying to tell them.
