The KOmmies are a bunch of Rupert Pupkins whose dreams of Revolution are perpetually interrupted by their Mommies yelling to them that it is time for supper.
p.s. I need to look up King of Comedy on the IMDB. I think that flick didn't get a good reception when it first came out but has grown in public respect over the years.
I think some critics liked it. Going by probably faulty memory it did moderate business. Sort of ressurected Jerry Lewis for 15 minutes or so.
At the time, people were confused that the movie wasn't violent. Also, the weight that DeNiro gained for RAGING BULL was a big distraction for years as DeNiro slowly slimmed back down. People would go to see one of his new movies thinking, I hope he's back to normal. It was a little freakish.
Re: King of Comedy--I have loved this movie from the first time I saw it in a filthy roach-ridden inner center city theater on Chestnut St in Phila, circa 1984. I still use lines like "you givin me a heart attack already" and "you are just as human as the rest of us if not MORE so" (De Niro to Jerry Lewis). Always happy when someone else recognizes that this poorly understood movie is REALLY FUNNY!
