There was an episode of Newhart (the 1980's sitcom) where Bob Newhart's handyman George announced he was giving up on the Red Sox. Bob Newhart would turn on the tv and hear stuff like "and in sports news, George Utley has given up on the Boston Red Sox!"

20 years ago, that was the stuff of cutting edge, surrealistic farce. Now it's happening every day in real life. "Some guy on the internet has given up on special prosecutor Fitzgerald!"

It's also interesting to note that 20 years ago, the only thing people got that worked up over was sports.

Awhile back I saw a documentary on Woodstock. One part I thought was pretty humorous was when it started raining. The MC came out on stage and "If we all concentrate REALLY hard together and sing Rain Rain, Go Away we'll make this rain stop!!!

So the MC and the entire crowd start to sing, and about 3 seconds into the song they were damn near drowned by a deluge that kept getting worse!
