Somehow, I don't see much Jesus in the latter at all.

Jesus would not have spoken to a group of graduating college students about birth control. You know that.

I wasn't aware that Mexico had a starvation problem. Can you cite the relevant articles for me?
Unlike you, I actually go there on a regular basis...and have lived there. Want an article, Google it. I'm not your researcher.

Life isn't just about the material world.

To someone who's hungry, that is ALL that life is about.

I've lived in different parts of Mexico. Same reactions. Have kids...but if you're poor, don't bother the Church. It is there to collect money...not dole it out.

You've lost what little credibility you had by that statement. There are Catholic (meaning part of the Church) charitable organizations that help the poor, not just in Mexico, but in almost all the countries in the world.

Amazing how that works. The Catholic Church is the largest private landowner in the world...yet somehow "material" stuff isn't important.

Yet, what it does with that land is what you fail to mention.

I know that? Hardly! I don't think Christ himself would have been anywhere near as circumspect as this kid was.

In other words, "There is no starvation problem in Mexico. I withdraw my statement." Is that what you meant to say?

Name me one country in the world in the Church's entire history where the Church has been the net donor, rather than the net beneficiary, of wealth. Not going to find it. The Church is a societal leech. I'm not knocking Christianity. I'm stating that organized religions find a way to profit at that the expense of those they purport to serve...that they do it in God's name is abominable.

No. You're being an @ss. Cross into any border town tomorrow and check out the kids who are begging. They are severely undernourished.

When Dr. King took his Civil Rights movement north to Chicago, he was shocked by the condition of Negros in the North. They had more money than their kinfolk in the South, but their families had disintegrated. The Black Muslims recruited kids like Malcolm X by showing them how to live like--ironically--respectable Church families.

Oh, so this is about organized religion in general now, is it?

Maybe you're right. Jesus would have thundered at a bunch of college kids about the evils of contraception, especially since He never had a single word to say on the subject in His actual public life.

The self-righteousness on this thread is simply unbelieveable.

Oh, so this is about organized religion in general now, is it?

The specific topic was the Catholic Church and its stance against birth control. The comment regarding organized religion was made to clarify that I'm not picking on the Catholic Church while ignoring the faults of other organized religions. However, my comments re: the Church and its position on contraception stand without qualification.

You are blaming the Church for the racism of the whites who have always run Mexico. The spirit of the conquistadores lives on, baby.

Technically true, but He spoke about it through His Spirit.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are fornication, uncleanness, immodesty, luxury, idolatry, witchcrafts, enmities, contentions, emulations, wraths, quarrels, dissensions, sects, envies, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like. Of the which I foretell you, as I have foretold to you, that they who do such things shall not obtain the kingdom of God.

Nope. If you read my comments, I specifically described the Church's mistreatment of poor Indians.
