White House Counsel Harriet Miers, the Supreme Court nominee who withdrew after a conservative revolt last fall, has allegedly vetoed several recommendations offered by conservatives to fill vacancies on federal courts.
The White House would not directly respond to the charge, which was made this morning during a conference call with more than 40 conservative leaders. Two people on the callwhose identities I promised to keep confidentialsaid they had inside knowledge of the recommended nominees whom Miers nixed.

I was very strongly opposed to the Miers nomination. But it's impossible to tell whether this story has any basis or not.
The Alito nomination was more or less forced on the administration by the firestorm that the Miers nomination provoked.
Is Miers now resentful of what happened? Who knows?
Still moving the goalposts, aren't they?
Do as I say or I'll leak something nasty to the press.
These are the kinds of "real true conservatives" who are part of the problem.
SHE WITHDREW HER FRIGGIN' NOMINATION!!
This pounding on Bush and Miers is just gratuitous piling on at this point.
It makes those who do it look mean and ridiculous.
This isn't news; it's idle gossip put forth by people who wish harm to this president.
It's pretty telling that you think it's so accurate.
"It's pretty telling that you think it's so accurate."
Hey, it's news whether you like it or not, and I know you don't like it. Tough.
Do as I say or I'll leak something nasty to the press.
These are the kinds of "real true conservatives" who are part of the problem.
And they are all, to a person, too gutless to put their names out as a source. Trash Miers and Bush from the sidelines. Not one word of gratitude for Roberts and Alito.
Is it any wonder that independent voters thinks conservatives (exemplified by such outfits as Human Events) are angry, vindictive people?
Oh, I forgot to thank you for bumping the thread. Man the number of people reading this story is surprising. And with that 6 degrees stuff....
It's not news; it's OPINION.
Whatever anybody does is NEVER enough; never.
It's a news story. You're welcome to your opinion though.
Hmm. After getting thoroughly trashed by them, they expect her to cheerfully approve their recommendations...
Maybe I'm missing something.
"After getting thoroughly trashed by them, they expect her to cheerfully approve their recommendations... "
Not at all. I'd expect Miers to hold a grudge and squash conservative candidates for the judiciary. Hey, she doesn't disappoint.
As long as the gutless wonders doing the rumor-mongering won't give their names, it's THEIR interpretation, i.e., opinion, of what's going on.
It's the way we usually think about pieces concerning liberals and the Democrats.
I remember when people on FR actually use to HATE that, but now that they've got a few "whisperers" saying what they want, it's fine and dandy.
Talk about selling out your principles.
why is she still even around?
thank goodness we got Alito up there.
In DC, people don't get mad, they get even.
And some of the crap that flew about Miers is the sort of thing that I would not say about anyone unless I was willing to fight a duel over those remarks.
Bottom line: if this is true, conservatives have taken yet another opportunity to not learn a lesson about not angering people they need to be on good terms with...
I heard from confidential sources the two complaintants are RAT sympathizers. Of course, I cannot reveal my sources.
And that is meant to be as insulting to Bluey as anybody wants to take it.
"As long as the gutless wonders doing the rumor-mongering won't give their names, it's THEIR interpretation, i.e., opinion, of what's going on."
Oh my. Now we're on to the name calling and foot stamping that have come to characterize your postings. This is a legitimate news story. It discusses an event that happened. I know you don't like this but as I said earlier, tough. I'm sure Harriet will get out of the kitchen when she's finished with the baking.
She's certainly done a lousy job of squashing candidates. You're projecting.
"We are to believe an anonymous source and dispose of Harriet Meirs?"
I doubt you will have anything to do with it. But thanks for stopping by.
