Why the sudden concern about Darfur? We know its not because the left actually cares about the people there. If they did, they would have made an issue of this a long time ago. (Besides, in case the lefties havent noticed, these folks are black.) So why are they suddenly holding rallies, with the willing connivance of the mainstream media, demanding that we do something about the plight of the people in Darfur?
The answer is simple: There is nothing about the Darfur situation that impacts our vital national interest, but they can use it to divert needed resources away from the War on Terror. Unfortunately, there are many people on the left who would rather see America lose the war than allow President Bush to win it.
Dont get me wrong: Im happy to help any way we can. I encourage people, especially those who have been out in the streets screaming about how concerned they are, to contribute money, time, effort, and whatever else they can to the people of Darfur. If the United Nations ever had any usefulness, this would be the kind of thing that they would tackle if they actually cared about anything but lining their own pockets and propping up every despicable tyrant on Earth. But what can and should the United States actually do about the situation?
As much as we would like to help, we do not have unlimited resources, so we have to use our force wisely, in pursuit of our vital national interest. Taking down terrorists is our most vital national interest. Being Meals on Wheels, however much we may sympathize, or stopping ethnic infighting, is not nearly as critical. It simply does not affect us as much. Yes, Darfur is suffering. Yes, we should pray on it, contribute what we can, and keep an eye on the situation. But right now, as a country, we have bigger fish to fry. Were already in combat, the Iranian nuclear situation is about to explode, and suddenly, these people think our most pressing priority should be Darfur?
Are they that desperate to undermine the War on Terror? Apparently, they are.
