Immigration Problem?….Bring Back Ellis Island…

My Grandparents emigrated here from Ireland in 1917 and passed through the halls of Ellis Island to secure their future in the land of hope and their new Home….The United States of America…

Ellis Island, From 1892 to 1954, over twelve million immigrants entered the United States through the portal of Ellis Island, a small island in New York Harbor. Ellis Island is located in the upper bay just off the New Jersey coast, within the shadow of the Statue of Liberty brought Hope to many seeking a new and better life in the Land of opportunity, including my Grandparents….

When My Grandparents emigrated they had to stay at Ellis Island to process and be inspected…They were checked by a Doctor to see if they were in "reasonably" good health and screened that they did not have any contagious diseases. Then a primitive form of a background check was accomplished to check out to see if they were who they say they were, and that they were not "Wanted Criminals" who committed crimes that were also considered crimes in the USA such as murder, rape, grand larceny…You get the picture….Then Finally they were interviewed to see If they had some sort of marketable skill which would give them the means to support themselves and find gainful employment….My Grandfather was a very talented carpenter, and my Grandmother could tailor a suit in record time…They were simple people who came from nothing to find a better life for themselves…

This process and criteria to be let into the USA seemed fairly logical, and a good idea to make sure that the USA did not get someone in the country that the "State" would have had to wind up caring for either by Public assistance or being locked up in prison….Of course Welfare and public assistance was almost non-existent in 1917 by today's standards, but it was an important criteria for the potential immigrant within the days of my grandparents to at least have "realistic" idea of how they were going to support themselves once they hit the shores of the US….My Grandparents came to the USA and assimilated into the culture of the USA and became US citizens because they Never forgot that they were coming to something better then what they just left in Ireland…
