Bottom line on AR:
What you see on 60 Minutes is what you get 24/7.
He drinks a wee bit.
He has been old for 40 years.
He earned his stripes. He was Army sgt in WWII writing for Stars and Stripes from front lines.
Whenever we had good breaking stories, he would come down to TV or Radio Net Assignment Desk, (He knew how powerful radio could be, especially before satellite trucks and betacams. One of his best lines was "Don't forget the radio side. The stiffs stuck in traffic on the Broooklyn-Queens Expressway aren't listening to their TV.")
He was there like an old fire horse answers the alarms. Lots of times he had some great coverage ideas. Getting him to edit your copy before you aired it was to watch Rembrandt at work.
He didn't want to go out on the story... that was for us "kids" He just wanted to "be there' as it happened.
He liked Dan Rather in a way. Dan was easy to like once you got past his politics and phony Texasisms. (Rather was one of the best "swordsmen" ever. In the 60s and 70s, Dan would be into an airport, off the plane, have his luggage, have a car rented and the Hertz girl off work and ready to "entertain" him in 15 minutes. Possibly even better than Jennings.)
But he didn't respect Rather. Called him the CBS Evening News Actor, as opposed to Evening News Anchor once. Rooney said "Oh, I'm sorry. I should correct myself.... or maybe I shouldn't."
Like I said, he drinks a wee bit.
Liberal? Somewhat... but the real deal.

I heard the tail end of a CBS radio roundtable program ushering in the new millenium.
The program ended with a few seconds for each participant to give his final thoughts on this auspicious occasion.
Rooney used his thirty seconds to comment on this Internet thing. He said that nothing on it was worthwhile and that it was for idiots.

Rooney is a senile old fart who should have been fired years ago....maybe he will get it now.Ah, leave him alone. If she don't kill the network, he will.

Somebody's nose is out of joint.I think old Andy is telling the truth.
I didn't think SeeBS needed another anchor anyway. They already were stuck on the bottom.

How about we arrange a televised, pay-per-view mud-wrestling match between Katie Kouric and Andy Rooney? I'll bet it would get a larger audience than her new news show.
I want a percentage for being the first to think of this idea.

Jay Leno's monologue from the other nite:
Katie Couric today said that she is very familiar with all the cast over at CBS and 60 Minutes, because she watched Willard Scott wish them all 100 year birthdays.
