Does Lynn Swann, Republican candidate for Governor of Pennsylvania and retired wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, deserve to be in the pro football Hall of Fame? When hearing this question for the first time, I imagine that most fans of professional football will probably say yes. The first thing that will probably come to their minds are the endlessly repeated replays of two or three spectacular catches he made during a Super Bowl game. However, a player's worthiness for inclusion in the Hall of Fame should not be based upon two or three spectacular catches. If that was the case, then journeyman wide receiver Joe Jurevicius would be a lock for the Hall considering his remarkable Monday Night Football reception against the Eagles three years ago. Few doubt that catch was one of the ten most spectacular of all-time, but I also seriously doubt that anyone will argue that Joe Jurevicius deserves to be included in the Hall of Fame upon his eventual retirement from the NFL. Also, in his nine years in the NFL, Jurevicius has been on three Super Bowl teams, including the championship Tampa Bay team. That total is only one short of Lynn Swann's four Super Bowls in nine years, yet once again I don't imagine that there will be a major outcry for Jurevicius to be in the Hall upon his retirement.

Zero Super Bowl wins might have something to do with that (not entirely fair, I know). But if I were the HoF committee, I'd put him in.

Wow, what a back handed hit. The libs must be getting desperate, trying to diminish his outstanding football record, in a vain attempt to discredit him in arenas outside of politics - does the author hope those false dispersions carry over to the political realm also? What a cowardly move.

Swann changed the position of wide reciever league wide. Because of the catches he made, recievers were held to higher standards when catching the ball.
25 years after he retired (prematurely due to multiple concussions) TV announcers still use the phrase "that's a LYNN SWANN catch!" not a Jerry Rice, T.O. or Marvin Harrison, and certainly not Joe Jurevicius catch. Swann was absolutely not the best ever, probably look to Jerry Rice there, but he's certainly deserving of the HoF. Jerry Rice made several 'Lynn Swann' catches in his career, but Swann never made a Jerry Rice catch.
The libs are afraid of Swann, he can win PA and that can't happen outside the black group Swann should be a part of.
Marvin is still active, can't go to the HoF yet. :P

Marvin is a show in already, he has better stats than Irvin in just 10years compared to Irvin's 12 years.
As a lifelong Ram fan, I don't even LIKE the Steelers! But Swann was the top WR on the dominant team of the decade. He changed the ways defenses planned, and was often double-teamed. Those of us who remember the decade remember him and Biletnikoff and Mel Gray and John Jefferson. Stallworth was the one who burned the Rams in the Super Bowl, but Swann was the #1 receiver. Stats don't tell half of it.
(In the early 70's ANY use of hands by the O-linemen was holding, a FIFTEEN yard penalty. Also, much more chucking of receivers was allowed.)
Franco Harris, however, was way overrated.
I think the former Cowboys' Cornerback Mark Washington would beg to differ.
Marvin with all due respect, kind of disappears come play off time, but then so does his QB.
