Republicans tend to be hesitant to crack down on illegal immigration ...because the members of the business community who make money by hiring illegal aliens, funnel part their ill gotten gains into Republican (and to a lesser extent, Democratic) coffers.

Nonsense and pure BS.

They don't want to hand the Hispanic vote to the Democrats.

They recognize that withholding FICA taxes on phony social security numbers is FREE MONEY for the government to spend.

They recognize that local economies for example in Montgomery County Maryland would become Third World-like without the illegal immigrant.

It seems to me, that if the Democrats were not asleep, they would see this an opportunity to do something for the poor. It is falacious to use national statistics, because, for the most part, illegals are working in different places than the Americans who are not working live. If someone would come up with a way to transport homeless men from New York city to central Nebraska to work in the meat packing plants, for instance, then we might get somewhere. I have long thought that media should report at least one story on who's hiring for every layoff story they do. If they informed people of opportunities, the problem of mismatch would take care of itself. For instance, Georgians could have harvested those onions, if they had known. But if the Dems and the media won't help, who will?
