Media Safe-Havens and the Clinton News Network.

That Dastardly Dick Cheney has done it again! Not only does he have powerful friends at the Evil Empire of Shadow known as Haliburton. Not only did he shoot a family friend, while relaxing on a bird hunt. He had the utter audacity to give an exclusive interview to Fox News instead of the paragons of virtue at CNN.

It didn’t necessarily have to be CNN he went to. The offense wouldn’t rise to the impeachment level if he had gone on “Hardball” with Chris Mathews. But to go on “The F-word Network”, there must be an Intifada!

Yeah, if I were in our Vice President’s shoes and I were given the choice of networks to which I’d spill my guts, I think I’d avoid giving any additional face time to a network that spent three hour segments on the story entitled “Cheney’s Misfire!” To me, this would give an impression of predisposition, rather than honest curiosity and impartial, fact-driven journalism.

I’d probably also avoid the network that dressed Dana Milbank up like Gomer Pyle on a squirrel hunt or had Bob Shrum on “Hardball” to speculate on which Iraqi reconstruction contracts were being handed out during the trip. MSNBC has yet to file legal paperwork as a progressive, left-oriented 527 Corporation, but eventually, the IRS will grow curious.

Also, there has to be an audience for an apologia to really be effective. If Dick Cheney apologizes on “Hardball”, with an audience share slightly lower than televised cockfighting on pay per view, can we say he’s really sorry?

Then; there is always The Big Three, where anchormen attempt to peddle stories about forged memos to attempt to discredit Dick Cheney’s election campaign. It’s not like Cheney has any motivation to interview with one of them. So who exactly does this leave available?

Well, there is this time slot on The O’Rielly Factor that Bill (not THAT obnoxious Bill) keeps offering up to Hillary on a silver platter. The time slot she won’t touch with a ten foot pole.

Yep, The Dreaded “F-Word Network,” that seems to give Coyote Blitzer and Jeff Cafferty such intense gastro-intestinal discomfiture. He didn’t actually go to O’Rielly, but he can’t be blamed for going somewhere that actually offered something close to a fair shake.

So what did Dick Cheney really do wrong? He was careless with a loaded weapon and shot a close family friend in the face. He owes a heart-felt apology to his friend and a substantial financial contribution towards his medical expenses.

So over what did CNN really blow a fuse? The fact that Cheney wasn’t thrown out of power and that he gave a personal interview to Brit Hume, rather than the fair-minded, never partisan Jeff Cafferty. They genuinely could have cared less whether Cheney’s family friend lived, died or got left in the woods to be eaten by chipmunks.

Even leaving the politics out of this discussion, the cheap and blatant careerism displayed over at MSNBC and CNN, contrasted by the calm and leveling demeanor of Fox News’ Brit Hume, made obvious why Dick Cheney interviewed where he interviewed. It also revealed why anyone with more than a casual interest in what actually happens in the world shouldn’t cast more than a fart in the Clinton News Network’s general direction.

Yeah, Jeff Cafferty and Dana "The Dorkmeister" Milbank have inspired yet another blaze-orange rant.
