Profoundly Unserious

The Muslim world is in an uproar over the latest perceived "offense against Islam". The "Cartoon Jihad" was jump started when Ahmed Akkari, a Danish Islamic scholar and activist, took booklets filled with unflattering cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed to the Grand Mufti in Egypt and various other Islamic leaders. Several of the most egregious cartoons had not been printed in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, but instead had been received by Akkari via mail. Akkari insists that his motive for publicizing the cartoons - which had been published in September to little notice - was to foster an "apology" from the paper. Instead, he incited a firestorm.

Ironically, the Islamic anger over the portrayals of Muslims as bloodthirsty terrorists has resulted in a worldwide rampage which has caused eleven deaths so far, and millions of dollars in property damage. In Britain, Muslim protestors carried signs which read, variously, "Europe You Will Pay", "Annihilate Those Who Disrespect Islam", (Behead, Exterminate and Slay were variations on this particular charming theme), "Freedom Go To Hell", "Be Prepared for the Real Holocaust" and "9-11 is On Its Way". The Religion of Peace strikes again.

While embassies burned and curiously available Danish and Norwegian flags were set afire in Iran and Syria, Arab editors who tried to defend the value of free speech were summarily fired in Jordan and France. The Western media, instead of defending core values, fell all over itself in paroxysms of liberal guilt - trying to probe the reasons for murder and general thuggishness.

In the meantime, prominent Democrats were busy disrespecting Coretta Scott King at her funeral in the attempt to seize the bully pulpit to fire yet another series of rounds at President George W. Bush. Reverend Joseph Lowery, co-founder of Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference, used the solemn occasion to mouth a quasi-rap against the hated Bush. "We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there, but Coretta knew, and we know, that there are weapons of misdirection right down here. Millions without health insurance, poverty abounds. For war, billions more, but no more for the poor."

Poetry aside, Lowery's arguments are specious. As Stephen Hayes has amply demonstrated, there were plenty of weapons found in Iraq, including fighter jets buried in the desert sands. Likewise, there is ample evidence (and eyewitness testimony) that WMD were smuggled out of Iraq into Syria in the days before the U.S. led invasion. There are not "millions" of people without health insurance, and regardless, anyone with a health problem can check into their local emergency room and receive indigent care courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer. The poorest family in the United States usually lives in a facility with running water and indoor plumbing. Most of the time they have at least one television and many times they own a car. Compared to families in the third world, they live in relative luxury. Nevertheless, liberals see only misery and hardship.

Not to be outdone, the perpetually aggrieved former President Jimmy Carter took the occasion of Scott-King's funeral to bash Bush over Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. "We only have to recall the faces of those in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi; those who were most devastated by Katrina, to know that there are not yet equal opportunities for all Americans." In case Carter missed it, most of the people in devastated Waveland and other Gulf Coast communities were white shrimpers and fishermen. In New Orleans, predominantly black poor families were stranded primarily by Mayor Ray Nagin's failure to use available school busses in order to effectually evacuate them. The ensuing chaos was also amply aided by Governor Kathleen Blanco's waffling on authorizing President Bush to utilize the U.S. military in search and rescue operations. It goes unremarked that they are both Democrats.

Carter also took to the podium to sternly warn that both "Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King had their civil rights violated through illegal wiretaps and covert surveillance". This was obviously meant to be a slap against Bush for the ongoing NSA program monitoring Al Qaeda contacts within the homeland. Of course, anyone with a laptop could easily discover that the renegade administration egregiously violating MLK and CSK's privacy was none other than JFK's and that the rogue administrator who authorized this was Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Their brother, bloviating Ted, sat in the audience grinning blithely at Carter's inanities.

It is astounding that these men have the gall to present themselves as possessing some sort of moral authority, given their past history. Carter - kowtowing to foreign corrupt dictators and timorous when it came to projecting American strength - largely set the table for today's Middle East crisis. Kennedy's behavior has remained beyond contempt since Mary Jo Kopechne's day.

Nevertheless, they brazenly ascend the podium and gratuitously apprehend a solemn ceremony in order to make political hay. Crass.

The Democrats prove, everyday, that they are a political party which has put politics before taste, decorum, comity and certainly national security. They fiddle while Arabia burns. They do not deserve to return to power, for they are deeply, profoundly, and unendingly unserious.
