Rod Serling was the master of the black and white screen, his sets were superb, and somewhere among his productions I remember a pawn shop. This small inconspicuous establishment featured dusty, almost opaque windows, where all manner of musical instruments hung in plain sight, along with other dim and unidentifiable items.

Really, REALLY depressing story.
Rod Steiger won an academy award for his performance....I think.

Rod Serling's redition was just as depressing, as I recall.
I used to like the Twilight Zone until one day I got tired of the constant depression and negativity of his plays. [I think I grew up and discovered that money DIDN'T grow on trees, the government wasn't the source of ALL and JFK'S "Camelot" was really "Stink-a-lot."]
They don't wear well, after all these years, imho.

I read the book (by Edward Lewis Wallant) long before I ever knew The Pawnbroker was a movie. Believe me, the book is every bit as depressing and bleak.

Pretty verbose, but a good read none the less. Thanks.
