If hmonitor slows the processor, that would explain why F@H was getting 95% of the cycles and still creeping along.

It's rocking now. The problem that was predicted to finish in 6 days this morning was done by supper. Thanks

How long does it take for a system to show up as inactive? Some of the WUs take several days to finish and with a power glitch or internet interruption they might not get returned for over a week. Would that cause them to appear as "not in service"?

We are leveling off at about 28,000 points per day.

Team Overtake estimates:
400 in 1 day.
300 in 14 days.
200 in 2 months.
100 in 8 months.

Used? Get a new system...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103539

Here is why Fry's is so eeeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvvvvvvvillllllllll...You can get the MB & CPU for about the same low price as newegg charges for the cpu alone!

I hate Fry's.

Overtake estimates:

Lemme see if I got this -

the smaller the group # i.e.,500 - 1000 vs 1001 - 1500 the sharper the incline of the curve to get there ... and the more effort and or time to get there ...

Uhhhh sooo if one is in the top 100 - the slope really get steep for overtakes and to displace #1- 10 or whatever it must be an almost vetical climb.

Close is relative. # 400 and # 500 are massive amounts of energy apart.

FR is going to move from 200 to 100 in 6 months? Awesome!

DU hits 500 in 7 months will still be light years behind FR 100 in 8 months ....

So it seems all we can do is bait them and have some reserves ready - I am going to buy a "cruncher this quarter - just for fun - and be on the lookout for some computer lab honey who wants to get married :-)

Also for $179 bucks I can get a brand new, AMD 2400+, internet ready system w/Linux. Dang, I can't really upgrade my old PIII for that. I hate Fry's.

You've hit the reason I havn't already jumped on making a cluster of old junk. I know that recent cpus are vastly superior to old stuff and it's just so cheap, I keep thinking why bother. I can buy some really cheap stuff, load a working linux distro on it and park it in a rack.

My only comment is that if you buy an ECS motherboard instead of an ABIT or an ASUS you're buying garbage that will likely cripple the performance. Shrug. Just my opinion. Willing to be wrong if someone can show me that a no-name chinese board can outperform Abit/Asus.

The first rig I built was an ECS MB. Perfect for beginners. It won't overclock. And yes it's garbage but so what? It doesn't know it sucks and it does everything I want. Surf the internet, email, run some adobe/word, and serve as a webmaster. I'm not running a high end CAD system. It seems to fold OK too, but I havn't been able to get it to iron or walk the dog.

In otherwords the price was right, as in *free* when I bought it as a combo at Frys. (Did I mention I hate Fry's)

I have zero issues with that. If you know what you're getting into and it does what you want...fair enough.

What I DO know is that boards that are not build for speed, open Excel and Word like champs, but when it comes to cranking cycles in games or folding proteins flop like fish out of water.

I am not trying to say that you have a system that doesn't do what you want/need. Far from it. Many systems do exactly that. I build gaming rigs which also excel at folding proteins, so I'm a purist in that respect. You will probably do great with that one. It's simply something I wouldn't do. Shrug, no biggie, have it it. It'll prolly do great. I'm not one to judge.

ok, I had to restart when I got home from work this evening and I've lost the little green icon that was in my dock (and the screen i could minimize/hide).

I found the folding@home folder in my library, but what do I click on to get my icon back (I'll put him permanently in the dock this time) and the screen that shows the protein? Is my mac still folding?

I've had a long day (and really long week), so my brain is fried.

I have been on this wu for about three days now and I'm only at step 62. Completed 12400000 of 20000000 steps. Do you know what the heck that means and how long before the work unit is finished?

"Used? Get a new system... "

Yea, that is a darn good price for new stuff. But for a no thrill folding farm, I'll be looking for dirt cheap, darn near free, bargains. A rack of 5 or 6 old PIII/P4 MB with nothing more then a NIC with a powersupply modified to power two MB's. Not costing more then $200. That's part of the fun for me, seeing how much horse power for as little cash as possible. I've seen a few PIII/P4 auctions including the CPU go for less then $30.

This is the guide I plan to follow. Already got the server and an old hub. I'll try to start with 4 MB/CPU/NIC combos, 2 PWR Supplies with spliced power cables, and some more CAT5.

Yeah I had glanced at that set-up several weeks ago when I had a serious geek on. It's several orders of magnitude above my linux and configuration skill level. Still I admire anyone who can follow the instructions and get it done. Fold on!

Oh and as I said before...craigslist has some near free "stuff".

The curve is definitely steeper where we're sitting, and only gets steeper from here on. We have to post about 30,000 points, just to move from 408 to 399. The gaps between the teams, are anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000, not 10-100 points. They're still cruising through deadwood, and while they may be making great mileage now, they're about to hit the hill country.

Also, it's about consistency, and staying active, long enough to accumulate the multi-million point totals.

and don't worry about the reserve. I don't have much time at work these days, but mid to late February, I know... I keep threatening, but there are a few hundred machines, that are just waiting to receive their clients. Actually, 23 computer labs, with 30 machines each, each and every one at least a PIV, 1.8 ghz or better, Dell Optiplex.

Pity none of y'all are near south Mississippi, and have a few spare hours, to donate to just loading the console.
