MacWorld Expo 2006 Steve Jobs Keynote Live Thread
me et al ^ | January 10 2006 | :')

Posted on 01/10/2006 9:04:53 AM PST by SunkenCiv

I was going to take a walk, but finally tracked down the scheduled time for Jobs' keynote (9 AM) and figured I'd better hang out. Any minute now. I wish I had a webcast address, I'd like to see it. Of course, the bandwidth will be swamped...

http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/01/10/livekeynote/index.php

"Jobs said that Apple sold 14 million iPods this holiday season, compared to 4.5 million for the 2004 holiday season -- that averaged to more than 100 sold every minute. The total number of iPods Apple has sold since the music play was first introduced in 2001 -- 42 million."

14 *million* iPods... 14 *million* iPods... 14 *million* iPods...

12:30 PM - "Something incredibly new: Photocasting. This is Podcasting for photos."
12:31 PM - "Wouldn't it be great if every time I updated a photo album, people subscribed to it would get the latest photos?"

As long as it wasn't someone's "moon" photos a la the fax machine pranksters...

12:32 PM - It works through .Mac.  You can set a password. "Whenever there's a change, those changes will get downloaded right into their subscription album.  They can make their cards with them, they can set their desktop pictures with them... We use industry standard RSS, so anyone can subscribe - you don't even need a Mac."

12:33 PM - He's going to give a demo. The best one-line explanation: Imagine grandparents who have their screen saver set to be photos of the grandchildren. Every time the parents update the album, gramma's slide show automatically starts showing the new pix.

[the .Mac service is actually getting pushed pretty hard in this keynote]

Heh...

I suspect he always goes through everything in minute detail, and the "just one more thing" announcement is generally a foregone conclusion. I've never followed one of these closely before.

9:49 am Recording - "Hi, I'm Steve, welcome to my podcast of Super Secret Apple Rumors"
9:49 am he's got "Pretty good sources in Apple"

[speaking of which... Steve wanted to bulldoze a 1920s-era mansion (which is a wreck) built by a copper baron, in order to construct a modern house more in line with the needs of his family. This got shot down, it's now considered some sort of historic structure; he should have had it torched, and then asked for the building permit]

"At long last, support for third-party DVD burners has finally come to Apple's DVD creation software, iDVD. 'Magic DVD' is a new feature that lets you create a DVD using drag and drop techniques, rather than having to manually assemble your project. Also, you can produce wide-screen menus for your DVD content."
