Ward Churchill was Cindy Sheehan before Cindy Sheehan was Cindy Sheehan.

A proud Ward commented that while resisting arrest, he attacked a Chicago police officer and "rammed his head into a concrete post."

Unbelievable!

Also interesting is the interplay between Weatherpeople like Bill Ayers and other groups and issues.

I was active building a coalition in everything anti-Mayor Daley from extreme right to left, mostly in near NW Chicago dominated by the Alinsky NCO. The Weatherpeople and other anti-war activists tried very hard to get the NCO involved in the anti-war movement, and disrupt-convention movement. I successfully prevented them from doing that, although the local Methodist and Presbyterian ministers and a few other NCO activists participated on the fringes.

The white Weatherpeople were really displaced civil rights activists. Pre-68 White liberals had dominated the civil rights movement at the decision making level. The Dr King types were the speakers. But the White liberals told them where and when to appear before the cameras and what to say.

As that shifted to "Black Power" the white liberals shifted to build the anti-war movement. They then co-opted the civil rights movement into supporting the anti-war movement, even though there was no logical connection between the two. I knew many leaders of the time, both white and black. It was a conscious plan of the white liberals to re-gain power of the "progressive movement" from the Black leaders. In the process, they destroyed the civil rights movement.

This obsession with controlling the progressive agenda was not limited to civil rights.

Bill Ayers was THE SON of CommonWealth Edison... a very rich brat who was motivated primarily by his relationship to his father, who WAS ComEd. The McNamara type technocrats of the left (and Bill Ayers during his rise) had pushed ComEd into peaceful uses of nuclear energy to generate electricity.... and to put the high sulfur but cheap Illinois coal and the many blue collar union people out of work. The progressives consciously planned that with many union miners out of work they could radicalize the union members into joining the violent revolution. Well that didn't work so well... and Bill Ayers realized that the real organizing opportunity was not with blue collar workers, nor with Blacks, but with rich guilt ridden white kids like himself.

Thus Bill Ayers flipped the progreessives from supporting nuclear power into an agenda of total opposition to nuclear power and all things nuclear. Of course, this was after Bill Ayers father had committed ComEd and its money to be the most nuclear dependent utility in the country. The progressives then proceeded with an agenda of over-regulation of nuclear with the stated intent of making the regulations so cumbersome and expensive that they would destroy the private utilty system and force a nationalization of the private utilities.

Of course, they also did symbolic things like making Evanston and Oak Park "Nuclear Free Zones". That was consciously done to raise the fear level of all things nuclear and shift the discussion of nuclear from the facts and logic of the technocrats to the emotions of fear.

Contrast this with France, which also is very nuclear power dependent, and where the technocrat left kept control of that issue and did not let it be co-opted by the wacky left.

Many interesting stories can be told about how issues and agendas are developed, and who develops them, and what their motivation is... In the case of Bill Ayers, his relationship with his father dominated his decisions.
