[ government bodies and major shopping complexes decided to start using the more politically-correct and all-encompassing "Happy Holidays" or "Seasons Greetings", which I thought was fine. ]

Could be from the word "Christ"(Christmas).. which is just the word Messiah hellenized(from a Greek word) that brings to the mind a range of concepts many don't want to think about..

The Christmas season brings forth and highlights the worlds need for a Messiah..
A Jewish Messiah.. for a Jewish view of reality by a Jewish God to all people whether Jewish or Gentile.. To admit there is a Messiah or even the need for one, is to legitimize Jews.. Many HATE THAT.. To face there is only really ONE race, the human race.. and being a Jew is only a mental construct.. and God, is the God of everyone..
