What tells you whether or not it was a good verdict?

The jury verdict. The newspaper articles. The prosecutor's statement. The venality of the perp's supporters.

The jury verdict itself is inadmissable as evidence as to whether it is good or not. That is, as you put it, "self serving." Yet more evidence of your own venality.

OH, and the prosecutor statement is also "self serving."

Oh, and your evaluation of venality is also self serving.

This leaves the newspaper. We don't know who they are known to be buddies with, so that judgment has to be suspended.
