GILCHRIST HITS CAMPBELL'S "FLIP-FLOP" ON CALIFORNIA BORDER POLICE INITIATIVE
Jim Gilchrist for Congress ^ | December 4, 2005 | Jim Gilchrist

Posted on 12/04/2005 2:53:18 PM PST by EternalVigilance

Lake Forest, CA — Minuteman Project founder and 48th Congressional District candidate Jim Gilchrist – who this weekend garnered the endorsement of the National Border Patrol Council, the union that represents 10,000 front-line U.S. Border Patrol agents and employees – today criticized opponent John Campbell for “backsliding” on his support of the California Border Police Initiative. Campbell in a recent media interview confirmed his discomfort and lack of commitment towards the Initiative he supposedly co-sponsors.

Campbell has “sold out all of the people who have donated money and who have ‘given their blood, sweat and tears’ to get this critical Initiative on the ballot,” stated Gilchrist.

“John Campbell should be ashamed of himself for reneging on his commitment to all those volunteers who have dedicated themselves to qualifying the California Border Police Initiative for the California ballot,” Gilchrist said. “Campbell, who has been pretending to be a co-sponsor of this initiative, pulled the rug out from under supporters when he announced, in a November 27 article in the Daily Pilot, that he hopes the border police force ‘never has to be used.’”

Campbell’s statement has caused a backlash among activists in the fight to stop illegal immigration and promote border security, who view the Initiative as an essential and urgently needed tool for beefing up law enforcement in the state.

“Every supporter of this initiative should ask the question, ‘what have we been fighting so hard for?’” said Barbara Coe, spokeswoman for the California Coalition for Immigration Reform and a long-time Orange County leader against illegal immigration.

Gilchrist noted that “those of us who are close to this issue have been aware for months that the California Border Police Initiative and Campbell for Congress campaign are managed by the same political consultant, Dave Gilliard, of the ‘big-dog’ – and very high-priced – Sacramento consulting firm of Gilliard, Blanning and Wysocki. It has become increasingly obvious that Gilliard set Campbell up as co-sponsor of this initiative for the sole purpose of ‘Johnny-come-lately’ candidate positioning.”

Continued Gilchrist, “Gilliard has intended all along merely to rehabilitate Campbell with voters who were justifiably upset with his sorry history of pro-illegal alien votes in the California State Legislature. Gilliard has attempted to cloak Campbell with an aura of credibility as ‘tough’ on border security and illegal immigration that he has never deserved on the merits. And now, from John Campbell’s own recent statements, we learn that, indeed, the ‘fool the voters’ Initiative will be set aside by Campbell after this special election for Congress is decided.”

“After his recent fundraising junket to Washington D.C., John Campbell has turned his back on the California Border Police Initiative and the hard work of its advocates. He is more clearly than ever revealed as a lackey to the Bush Administration’s pro-amnesty, open borders agenda. The ambitious politician who is John Campbell has revealed his true colors … again.”

“In the best tradition of John Kerry, Campbell now says that ‘I supported implementing the border police force before I opposed implementing the border police force.’ In fact, John Campbell is a worthy successor to the John Kerry of the 2004 election, as ‘flip-flop champion’ of 2005,” claimed Gilchrist.

“Now,” added Gilchrist, “the chickens are coming home to roost for ‘flip-flopping Honest John’ Campbell. In the last few days, our headquarters has been deluged with new supporters and volunteers, many of whom tell us that that John Campbell has let them down. I want the voters of the 48th District, who are going to the polls this Tuesday, December 6, to know that my dedication to support and materially sustain the men and women on our first line of defense will never waver. I will never back off from my commitment to put a halt to the flood of illegal immigration and to secure our borders.”

The Cunningham district (CA-50) already has Sen. Bill Morrow, Asm. Howard Kaloogian and fomer Congressman Brian Bilbray in the running for the GOP nomination. Ms Busby, the Democrat, is of little consequence. The district includes MCAS Miramar.

We don't need Gilchrist who appeared with Morrow at anti-illegals forums.

Most Freepers in that 50th district (self included) are looking closely at Kaloogian and Morrow. What Bilbray brings to the table is seniority. Even though he represented a different district, were he to succeed Cunningham, he'd bring his seniority with him to the House.

There are some things folks should know about Bilbray's record:

Voted NO on banning gay adoptions in DC. (Jul 1999)
Voted YES on funding for alternative sentencing instead of more prisons. (Jun 2000)
Voted YES on prohibiting needle exchange & medical marijuana in DC. (Oct 1999)
Voted YES on starting implementation of Kyoto Protocol. (Jun 2000)
Voted NO on decreasing gun waiting period from 3 days to 1. (Jun 1999)
Voted YES on Prescription Drug Coverage under Medicare. (Jun 2000)
Voted YES on more immigrant visas for skilled workers. (Sep 1998)

In fairness, his very competitive congressional district then included the homosexual quarter of San Diego. Redistricting increased the Dem majority in what is now the 53rd leading to his narrow defeat in 2000.

"California conservatives in the district must vote for Jim Gilchrest. Not because he has any chance of winning, but because the Bush administration and Congress are not serious about border security and need to be sent a message."

I disagree. Campbell is a conservative Republican who will do a great job in the House. He is in favor of border security even if that's not his only issue. While Mr. Gilchrist should be commended for his work with the Minutemen Project, his stubbornness in running in a district with a perfectly good conservative alternative in Campbell kept Campbell below 50% in the jungle primary (Campbell got 46%) and thus kept Campbell from already representing his district in the House instead of having to wait a month and a half for a run-off. And if Gilchrist gets enough votes that the Democrat ends up winning with 40%, it will be a case of Gilchrist cutting off his nose to spite his face, since the Democrat will do absolutely nothing to stop illegal immigration.

He volunteered for the Marines and went to Vietnam, where he was seriously wounded. Purple Heart recipient.

Big deal. John Kerry certainly did much of this and arguably did it all, but I didn't vote for him.

His Minuteman Project has done more to focus public attention on the border problem than anything else.

Like I said, he's a single issue noisemaker. He has 0 substance on any other issue. For all his record tells you, he could be Karl Marx on every other issue. I'm not saying he is, but you insist on saying that Campbell is masqurading, and you certainly have less credibility saying that then I would if I chose to say Gilcrest is masqurading, since he has no record on any other issue.

Don't worry. Gilchrist outpolled all three Dems put together in the primary.

He has single-handedly made the Dems the third party in the 48th District.

A historic feat.

And Campbell is no 'perfectly good conservative alternative'.

He's a phony who ran away from conservatism until he thought he needed to sound like one to run for Congress.

"What Bilbray brings to the table is seniority. Even though he represented a different district, were he to succeed Cunningham, he'd bring his seniority with him to the House."

Bilbray may claim he'll get his 6 years of seniority back, but I doubt it. Unless Speaker Hastert personally gives him his seniority back, his seniority will start at 0. Only when an ex-Congressman is wooed to run for office again in a district that would be hard to win without him are ex-Congressmen given their old seniority back, and Duke's district gave Bush 55% in 2004 and will be won by whomever wins the GOP nomination (unless Gilchrest runs there too and gets 25%, alowing the Democrat to win). Why would Hastert piss off dozns of Republicans elected from 2000 onwards who would be skipped over in seniority if he gave Bilbray his seniority back for no good reason? It sounds to me that Bilbray is claiming that he'll get his seniority back, but that it's just a ploy.

"In fairness, his very competitive congressional district then included the homosexual quarter of San Diego. Redistricting increased the Dem majority in what is now the 53rd leading to his narrow defeat in 2000."

You are correct that Bilbray's old district was quite liberal and that his issue positions were fine, since a true conservative couldn't win there (which is not the case in Duke's CD, of course). But when Bilbray lost to Susan Davis in 2000 it was under the old lines; 2002 redistricting made the CD even more liberal, which is why Bilbray didn't seek a rematch against Davis.

Yeah, but John Kerry go 40.44% in the district in 2004. Unless Gilcrist is taking a good chunk of his votes from the Democrats, there is a clear and present danger that Young could win with 38% or so. Remember, those Kerry voters have nowhere else to go but to Young (especially since Brewer lost in the primary), and they may decide to turn out in the run-off like they did against Jean Schmidt in Ohio (when Paul Hackett nearly won the special election in a district that was like 4% more Republican than the CA-48). So while I hope that you are correct and Young finishes third on Tuesday, I wouldn't want to risk him finishing first, especially when the GOP nominee is a fine conservative.

He's not...he just plays one on TV...now that he wants to be a Congressman.

He's made a fine attempt to become Jim Gilchrist on immigration, but it just isn't working. John and Ken finally have his number, as do all the great Orange County border activists.

“These people are clearly members and rooted in our community. They’re going to stay here every bit as much as you or I are going to stay here.” -John Campbell, OC Register

In the Assembly, John Campbell voted to give in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens, AND he voted to allow Mexican-issued ‘Matricula Consular’ cards to be used as identification in California!

“Illegal immigrants should be given the same benefits as everyone else…” - John Campbell, OC Register

A Sample of John Campbell’s Voting Record: (taken from http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/bilinfo.html)

AB 540 (Firebaugh) Provides in-state tuition fees for illegal immigrants.

Passed the Assembly 57-15, 9/14/01 - John Campbell: Aye

ACR 229 (Diaz) Allow illegal aliens to use the sham Matricula Consular (Mexican ID) as legal form of identification.

Passed the Assembly 71-7, 8/30/02 – John Campbell: Aye

AB 60 (Cedillo) Would give illegal immigrants the right to have California driver’s licenses.

Passed the Assembly 52-20, 9/14/01 – John Campbell: Abstain

His phoniness on prolife issues is similiar. He was quoted extensively in the past saying that he would do nothing to stop abortion. Now you'd think he was James Dobson.

I already said I didn't if you were paying attention.

But since apparently service in Vietnam automatically qualifies someone for office, as it seemed to make up for Gilcrests complete and total lack of experience on every issue except immigration in your eyes, perhaps you should have voted for Kerry.

Explain how I am doing that.

You claim that Gilcrest has a great record, but you cite nothing but his vietnam service and his founding of the minutemen.

Furthermore, you claim that Campbell is 'faking' it, and isn't a real conservative, even though you can't seem to attack anything but his record on illegal immigration.

Yet you keep insisting that Gilcrest is better on all issues, because he is a 'real' conservative, even though you cannot cite anything else other then his vietnam record as any sort of record of any sort that he has.

It would logically follow then, that his vietnam record is a paramount issue to you that proves what sort of Congressman he would be. If this is your standard, it would logically follow that you would vote for Kerry, since he had a vietnam record and purple hearts as well.

Of course, what you really mean, is that you merely feel that Gilcrest is more genuine of a man, not a career politician, or something along those lines, and that a vietnam record, while not a perfect indicator (i.e. John Kerry), is a pretty good one.

But what it all boils down to, is that you 'feel' Gilcrest would make a better congressman. But it's just that, intuition. Beyond Illegal immigration, you have no proof or hard evidence that he is good on any issue.

I just thought I'd mention, I don't know how long you've been around internet message boards, but attacking someone's spelling is the first sign that you are someone who can't argue a point logically and are not worth talking to.

Nobody in their right mind spellchecks every one of their posts, I usually don't even bother to backspace if it's clear what I mean. That's pretty much universally true on all message boards.

So I'd stop trying to win arguements that way if you want anybody to like or respect you. Frankly, I'd stop doing that if I had any self respect at all.
