In the wake of Hurricane Katrina two sports were all the rage in New Orleans.
One was the blame game, attributing all local and state incompetence to the feds.
The other was inventing and spreading stories of murder and mayhem -- killings, rapes, firing at rescuers, bodies stacked like cordwood.
But the accounts turned out to be grim fairy tales. They were also hardly harmless sensationalism -- if there be such a thing; because of them people suffered and apparently died.
* Editor & Publisher headlined an article, "Mortuary Director Tells Local Paper 40,000 Could Be Lost in Hurricane," while the French paper Liberation ran a detailed report on 1,200 people drowning in a single school.
* Oprah Winfrey's special report from New Orleans was wall-to-wall hysteria.
Winfrey herself, knowing how trusting (or gullible) her audience is, told them that in the Superdome "gangs banded together and had more ammunition, at times, than the police."
If all of this sounds like something from a post-apocalyptic zombie movie, that's pretty much what it was said professional rabble-rouser Randall Robinson. Four days after the storm "thousands of blacks in New Orleans are dying like dogs," he wrote, and "have begun eating corpses to survive." Just four days and already feasting on your friends?
Numerous articles since then have revealed there's no evidence any of the above took place. The death toll for all of Louisiana, which is rather bigger than just New Orleans, appears to be about 1,000.
Nagin also ordered virtually the entire police force to abandon search-and-rescue efforts in order to stop the non-existent "roving bands." Turns out some of the worst criminals were his own police, but even New Orleans' not-so-finest weren't killing or raping.

Don't quote Randall Robinson or you will get 3 days suspension for being racist.
the hurricane prof from LSU, so feted for his "prescient" projections of the toll the storm would take, predicting 10,000 deaths on MTP 9/4, still "thousands" again on 9/11 when questioned by mr.Tim-- where his the follow up with him? (unfortunately, we have our own with Tony Snow's hundreds of ghost police, unless the other shoe is a really long time dropping)

The media can say these things and put out the dribble because, it can. Their in no accountability for any of their lies - it is free speech ya-know and since a vast majority of Americans have no options for this monopoly nothing will change.
I bet 60 Minutes and Dateline and Nightline will all be doing special reports on why the media failed so horribly in reporting this story, complete with tear jerking "up close and personal" segments on the individuals who died needlessly as a direct result of the ratings driven media fabricated hysteria as well as how vial racial stereotypes allowed network producers to report wild, illogical and totally unsubstantiated rumors as actual fact. < / sarcasm >

I think some dems and the MSM were working together. I think it was a sinister game that was played (Attempted Coup D'Tat) and even if it failed it was still a win win situation for them. Because they could still get the country to blame President Bush and FEMA for what went down in the aftermath of Katrina.
I think Governor Blanco had President Bush in between a rock and a hard place because he had to get her permission to go into her state. But we all know, (and only because she was caught on tape saying she hadn't asked for the military) that she would not give President Bush the permission. Why? Why did she deliberately hold back the help that was needed to save her own people?
If President Bush had gone into her state with out her permission you know the dems would have tried to impeach him. And that is what I think the media was doing with all the sensational stories stirring the public frenzy. They were trying to push the President into taking an action that the dems could use to impeach him.
And I also think the title to this story should have been "The media lied (so the dems could try to take down President Bush) and people died!"
"As The Waters Rose and Katrinas Attempted Coup D'Tat"
Anyway, that's my take on it.
Media Lied, People Died
***Nagin lied,People Died
I can't remember, but weren't there 25,000 body bags delivered to just NO alone?
I think your right on that. Thanks to the media and Mayor Nagin. They made us all think there were bodies floating everywhere. Turns out it was all media hype. Build the story to push what agenda? And that's why I think there was a very sinister deal going on between the MSM and the dems.
