Like the evil genius Professor Moriarity, Rove is constantly scheming to undercut the DUmmys, but in this case, well...no, I don't exactly see the logic of alienating the conservative base.

I think it's pretty simple:

His grand plan is to destroy the Democratic party by splitting off parts of key member groups. Get 3 percent more of black voters, 4 percent of hispanic voters, 5 percent of women, etc. Then the democrats lose their hold on power.

He probably justifies it by saying "where else are the conservatives going to go?" He thinks the new "big government" GOP will attract more big government moderates than it alienates small government conservatives.

Which is fine and dandy plan until you think about it. What's the point of gaining power if you abandon your core principles to do it? "Yes, we're the biggest party now. Too bad we don't stand for what we said we stand for. At least we won!"

That's all it's about to some people: Winning, like it's some kind of game. It's not merely about winning, it's about how you govern.
