I generally like Jesse Lee Peterson, but here I think he's being too harsh. I just arrived home from Lake Charles where I spent two weeks as a volunteer nurse for the Red Cross in the Civic Center shelter. 90% of the evacuees, and all but 4 or 5 of them where black, were wonderful, patient and unfailingly polite people. In fact, I dare say they were a lot more patient in their tribulations than many of us in the North would have been. Even when we ultimately had to disappoint them over and over due to a lack of supplies, etc; they were incredibly patient and understanding.
I agree with a previous poster. It's a shame a small minority ruin it for the majority.

If blacks would listen to THIS man and BE the intelligent, honest, hardworking people they truly are, Jesse Jackson, Louis Farakhan, Charles Rangel, et al would be unemployed.

I can't even imagine what would happen if a white person had said this.
But I wish a white person would. That's the only way this point of view will get any press.

I think a generalization is in order, as the majority of blacks DO expect someone else to take care of things. Even those with more money, expect someone else to take care of things. How many blacks do you see helping with the relief effort. Or how many do you see lambasting Jackson and Farrakhan for riling people up, not helping them in their hour of need....

But that is what Rev. Peterson is calling for...whites to stop being afraid to speak up to blacks and to start saying 'no' to them.

Just out of curiosity, are you black? I knew you weren't. You don't see many of them helping out. I worked at the Salvation Army call center...not one black volunteered.
