She says it's the only state where when an announcement is made that the temp may drop below 40, or snow might be on the way, the stores are immediately cleared out of milk, bread, and Slim Jims. Oh no it's noottt! :) Honestly though, if they predict snow here it's more likely going to be ice, and when we get ice we usually lose power. It's the same rule as for a hurricane, stock up with a few days supplies just in case.

That is an exception peculiar to your area.

I can't speak for other parts of Georgia, or even other stations in the area, but WJBF (local ABC affiliate) is pushing the 'Don't panic, don't worry, don't rush the stations' mantra. They did the same last time too.

Ya' right...All five high schools in my immediate area are this way.....Maybe your area is the exception?

Cutting postal deliveries would kill a lot of businesses. I would immediately cancel my movie by mail membership, for example.

Gov Perdue may just be doing something positive when everyone else is screaming and running in circles.
Closing schools for two days will save an estimated 500k gallons of diesel fuel used by buses...power bill savings by closing the school buildings...and some soccer moms fuel too.
But this is not all. He is also activating an Alternate Work Schedule for state employees (4 days 10 hours etc), and even relaxing telecommuting rules.
Most likely he is trying to reduce the panic buying and gas lines that inevitably take place, and thinking of some innovative ways of saving energy. He has already stopped state tax on gasoline based on Katrina until the end of September.
All in all, he is taking some positive steps. He is a doer, not a sit back and see what happens type of guy.
It's easy to criticize when you don't have the responsibility on your shoulders. Besides...if the kids are not in school, they will boost the economy by spending monies.
My two cents.

Reporting panic gas buying in Barrow County GA...gas stations are packed..long lines. I just got from Kroger and their little gas station looked like they were giving it away free.
At least TWENTY cars were in each line toward the Kroger parking lot and 5 or 6 in each line on the other side.

Most schools (mine did) that had websites and assignments were posted on it. If students missed, they could log on and get their assingments, or have them emailed.

re: Most busing is not a liberal plot
I really didn't mean to say that it is. I'm speaking only of those systems for which I have firsthand knowledge. The school systems in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties have been under the direct supervision of a federal judge for over 30 years. That is the only reason for busing students all the way across the county when there are school much nearer. Please don't misunderstand me. I am not taking a blanket approach to busing, simply saying it is done in some areas under the orders of a federal judge and it just might be time these judges bring their expectations into the era of limited fuel that's more and more expensive.

"At least TWENTY cars were in each line toward the Kroger parking lot and 5 or 6 in each line on the other side."Panic buying...if people didn't panic, there wouldn't be long lines and gas stations running out. It's like some kind of weird lemming behavior. IF suddenly tomorrow, no one could get gas for a month, that extra 7 gallons that they waited 40 minutes in line to get (with the engine running and AC going)..will only go so far and then pzzzzt any way. I have less than a half a tank in my 4 cylinder honda and I'm not going to panic. Been through this before in the 70's. (and the insane toilet paper shortage of 1973 because some late night tv host made a joke about TP shortage and the next day people went nuts buying up all the TP..I kid you not..I worked in a supermarket at the time and didn't know WHY most of the customers coming thru my check were only buying TP. Shelves went empty. We couldn't stock it fast enough: that was FL)

That shows us just how worthless your average state government and public schools are to begin with. Gotta save money on gas! Right.

I live in Charlotte, NC (U-City). I haven't heard any follow up on the Cabarrus County school-fuel story. I also haven't tried to chase it down, either.

I used to live in Concord. Just moved south of Charlotte. They will close Cabarrus County schools at the drop of a hat.

When they tossed it back to Wolfgang Blitzer he said, " A VERY DISTURBING DEVELOPMENT." Wolfgang is very disturnbed that the kids will miss two days of socialist indoctrination.

Wolfgang is very disturnbed that the kids will miss two days of socialist indoctrination. I was thinking about that. I suppose since it is a Republican Governor it is "Disturbing" but if it was a Democrat Governor it would have been "An Insightful Initiative"
