FEMA, President, Governor and Mayor all failed in some ways. Primarily, - to communicate and plan effectively. This article hits hard, and points out that the governor failed to ask the President for Federal help in time.
...not only did Blanco let her people down and let them become sideshows in human misery ... she got her friends and special sets of tourists types out soon enough....
The city leaders had at least two full days to use these hundreds of buses to evac the poor, exactly as their own emergency management plan called for.
Here's the southeast Louisiana evac plan supplement, most recently revised in 2000. Go to page 13, read paragraph 5. It states:
5. The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating.
From NOLA website:
Nagin singled out Gov. Kathleen Blanco for criticism,
saying that the governor had asked for 24 hours to
think over a decision when time was a luxury that no
one, especially refugees, had.
When the president and the governor got here, I said,
'Mr. President, Madame Governor, you two have to get
in synch. If you don't, more people are going to die.
Blanco and Bush met privately at his insistence, Nagin
said, after which Bush came out and told Nagin that he
had given Blanco two options, and she requested a full
day to decide.
It would have been great if we could have walked off
Air Force One and told the world we had it all worked
out, Nagin said. It didn't happen, and more people
died.
One might ask these people how that gentlemen with the bus got 70 people out of there with nothing but one bus and his innovative thinking?
Duh......
Kind of puts them to shame doesn't it?
I suspect we saw a behind the scenes turfwar over who was going to call the shots in New Orleans. That is sad, when people have to lose their lives because of people's egos or fears about losing power....
The photograph on the bottom right needs to be plastered across the internet and the TV networks.
It would be nice to see this in a national newspaper.
excellent read, and on the money
That pic on the bottom, is one hell of an eye opener!
It sure is!
Yeah, it's an abomination.
The governor applied politics to a disaster situation and decided it suited her political outlook to make it worse. She abandoned these people, many of whom died because of it, yet it's the President who is being portrayed by a willing media as a killer of black people.
I'm doing my best! There are over 400 city buses in those two flooded parking lots, forgotten!
Pinging this for later...looks fantastic!!
1.2 miles is waliking distance. So many buses, so close at hand.
Yep, the more we learn of the inept Mayor and Governor, the sicker I feel. Their lack of ability to handle a crisis cost people thier lives.
