Because it's a stupid Canadian holiday, which celebrates what ever each city area wants it to celebrate.
No one really knows what it for.
All it really ever means is that summer is half over.
Earlier, I drove my son to his friends house, and saw but a few brave souls not lost in the depth of end of summer depression. (This is Canada, remember.)
