Don't hold back, Dirk. Tell us what you really think!
As a fan of the original series, I have to say one thing: It sucked. It really sucked. It was horrible! It was truly bad corporate sci-fi. In fairness, the original series might have been better had cable TV and its gazillion channels been around. The ABC suits smothered whatever life there was in the original.
Makes me want to go out and buy "The A-Team" on DVD.
It's good because it's not a direct allegory. I do read it as a bit analagous to our current situation: a fight for our lives against a relentless enemy which has vague complaints against us, but who should have gotten over it a long time ago. The bad guys always have a point of view, but it's clear that the cylons are bad guys, with the exceptions of those with pangs of conscience. Lots of discussion of the nature of religion. All very good stuff without Hollywood telling us what we should think about it.
Well they didn't quite just "cast" him like to shut him up. They approached him, from what I've read, more as a peace offering.
To-may-to, to-mah-to.
Ping
They do the big thing that good sci-fi does: they ask questions without providing answers. Sci-fi isn't about telling the audience what you think, but helping them figure out what they think.
Keep in mind that without Hatch spending a lot of the last 20 years insisting BSG still had legs there probably wouldn't be a new show. It's good to give him a few bucks for his efforts.
Starbuck was always my favorite and to see him recast as Stardoe made me want to puke. You couldn't pay me enough to watch the new show.
Funny, but Dirk seemed to be enjoying himself yucking it up with the new Starbuck in the extras on the mini-series DVD.
The DVD was a father's day present. For the sake of completeness and ignorance my kids also got me the DVD of the original Lorne Greene version. As punishment I forced them to watch it and they were howling with laughter by the end. Maybe it's not saying much but I think the new series is the best TV or movie drama I've EVER seen. That being said it wouldn't surprise me if they screw it up before the eventual end.
Solid writing, solid acting. I'm sorry the same cannot be said for the crapfest that was your series.
I once agreed with you. I was mistaken.
The new series kicks ass.
Perhaps for you it now kicks ass but I thought it was a sham. Still do. If you want to do a sci-fi show like the new one, then do it but don't try to pretend that it is from the original.
Opps. My bad. I knew that the fellow they cast as Zarek was on the original show, and that he was bitterly opposed to the remake... until they cast him.
But, yeah, the new Battlestar is one of the best shows on television.
For me, it's the reverse. I watched the first season. But now that the second season is out, I find that I cannot stand the show.
It seems to be all about bashing the military and religion.
The two shows are entirely different animals, and I'm sure the new one is a good show for those who like it.
I've tried watching the new show on a number of occasions and I'm put off by the 'sexy cylons' and the pervasive darkness of the new show.
If they had given the show a different name, different character names, etc, I might not have been as repulsed by it as I am. From what I've seen of the current show, I think THIS one is a crapfest. It matters little to anyone, as we are allowed to have preferences. It's called 'diversity'.
I agree totally with Dirk Benedict's writing on it. He's entitled to his opinion just like the rest of us. Just because we disagree doesn't mean we have to trash someone or what they have to say for themselves.
