"The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth in West Virginia... It is necessary that the order be promoted immediately and in every state in the Union. Will you please inform me as to the possibility of rebuilding the Klan realm of W. Va?" Byrd' letter to the Klan's Imperial Wizard, 1946.

To me, that makes it pretty impossible for him to distance his Senate career from his Klan past.
But.. But... He claims he quit years earlier.
Another interesting point. He claims both that he discovered, while in the Klan, that he should become a politician (because someone convinced him) and also states that he joined the Klan because he had previously determined he wanted to be a politician and that joining the Klan would help him. Still can't get his story straight... so which is it?
But didn't he rise to the rank of Exalted Cyclops, not merely Kleagle?
I believe I read something to that effect in some comment on this same book of his.
This is WONDERFUL stuff!
This is like our Senior Beached Whale here in Taxachusetts - the Dishonorable Edward Chappaquiddick Kennedy - righteously denouncing the use of "water-boarding torture" that "simulates drowning" as part of the interrogation techniques at G'itmo.
I half expected the Bloated Idiot to continue, "Take it from Ted Kennedy, when it comes to drowning - to hell with simulating it - put the terrorist bastards into my Oldsmobile and let me show you how drowning is properly done!"
Byrd, Kennedy, et al = what hypocrital frauds!
LOL! Love to see some Kennedy kid lookalikes doing that commercial "This isn't your father's Oldsmobile".!!!
Would the MSM have done the same if a Republican had been a member of the KKK? NO.
Stunning double standard... And shameful.
Byrd, Kennedy, et al = what hypocritical frauds!
And don't forget the MSM that covered for them all.
Walter Williams, explained that Byrd's 1945 letter quoted in Graham Smiths When Jim Crow Met John Bull, and more :
During World War II, ex-Ku Klux Klansman, now U.S. senator, Robert Byrd vowed never to fight with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.
But he never saw a pube in his coke.
bump
Oh the MSM still tries to pin the GOP as the party of David Duke.
Yep, they give a pass to their own...
