GTMO, an American Apology
Earlier this week, former President Jimmy Carter, demanded the Guantanamo Bay prison camp be shut down. This is not a startling statement from the man most known for his work providing homes to the homeless, and equally known for his inability to free American hostages in the prison camps in Iran. Perhaps, the former President should suggest building homes for suspected terrorists to replace the fences and razor wire currently used to detain them. He could launch a Habitat for Malcontents movement which would surely thrust us past France for a Medal of Compassion
Last week Amnesty International compared the GTMO prison to a gulag. Not surprisingly, the Bush administration took exception to the comparison and almost immediately Amnesty International backtracked, well sort of, by using the typical, We were misunderstood, but you get are point defense. I guess in Amnesty Internationals estimation three hots and cot are akin to forced labor camps located somewhere in Siberia.
Why are the liberal left so fascinated about the worlds opinion of the United States? Its obvious; the war on terrorism is not their war! The people that are critical of Bushs gulags are the same people who praised Bill Clinton for the compassion he showed for taking a stand on ethnic cleansing in the Balkans. At any given moment, the lefts henchmen are perched to launch an assault against any Bush policy to show the world how sensitive and compassionate they are at the same time attempting to de-legitimize a conservative presidency. I guess this sort of thing makes good dinner conversation at upscale Manhattan cocktail parties.
I should reserve some of criticism; after all, I suspect that most of the liberal left has never served in the military. They probably have not walked a Baghdad street to suddenly be hit by the shrapnel of a homicide bomber. And I doubt many of them have been to Kabul where women had been stoned to death for simply taking off their burkas, showing their faces in public. Yes, we should be careful not the hurt the feelings of our leftist friends who paint Donald Rumsfeld as a war criminaland Fidel Castro as an innovator of social reform. Makes sense to me.
To solve President Bushs gulag problem, I suggest marketing. Weve been told by the chattering-skulls, the left markets themselves much better than conservatives do. After all, humans are emotional creatures and the left has an uncanny ability to prey upon the feelings, and often ignorance, of an American populace more interested in Brittanys latest trashy t-shirt than the beheading of American citizens. Perhaps President Bush, on behalf of the American people, should take out full page adds in the London Times, Le Monde, Pravda, and the Berliner Abendblatt. The add could go like this,
The United States is sorry to the world for detaining about 1,000 of its fellow citizens in hopes of deterring the decay of humanity and the murder of hundreds of thousands of other citizens. We recognize that a prison is an intrusion on the rights of these detainees to commit these atrocities and for that, we are sorry. Furthermore, we deeply apologize to the people of Afghanistan and Iraq for placing your country in dire straits, free of dictatorship, tyranny, freedom of speech, and free elections. In the future, we will only free those nations, the American left deem worthy of our involvement.
With a statement like this, not only would we get that Medal of Compassion award, but President Bush would certainly win the Noble Peace prize, bumping Castro out of the running.
Very good post. However, there's nothing compassionate about the French. They left their seniors to die while they all went on vacation last summer. They do, however like to give the impression they care about someone who is not privileged to be French. It's all window dressing though.
Send bill clinton to Africa, under strict supervision, (there is to be no giving council to young boys and girls whatsoever). Send him under the pretense in building his legacy.
Both x's are to pay for their own trips.
Jimmuh and Willie: a**holes with arms.
I heard someone on a talkshow talk about this yesterday.
If not GTMO, WHERE? Leavenworth? Should we give these muslim jihadist, Attorneys? Maybe they could pass ideas and targets back and forth?
We are better off with those losers in GTMO - and it probably pi%%es off Castro to boot.
Two-fer-one!
