The founding fathers did base the US constitution on Enlightenment principles. They certainly weren't atheists, but many weren't really Christian, either. Remember that the US claims itself to be a free nation where people of all religions can live without being discriminated against. I don't want to see this ideal cast aside because of perceived threats to Christianity. You like cheese?

An important distinction has to be made between the British Enlightenment and the French Enlightenment. The former forms the basis of both classical liberalism and modern conservatism, as well as of the Declaration of Independence. The latter is responsible for much of what is called "progressivism" today, as well as the excess of most statist philosophy.
