Pardon me. I was just checking a response to NicknamedBob on another point and noticed this one of yours.

My quest may help you or it might help me. I've been trying to recall a years ago politician's explanation of how the parties differed greatly around 40 or 50 years ago and that even, 'conservative' and 'liberal' had differing interpretations of the Constitution then than now. Are either of you knowledgeable enough to expand on that for me?

And, Bob, how do you know for sure that the country is becoming more conservative?

The modern conservative movement is only about 40 years old, founded by William F Buckley. Democrats of the 30's and 40's would today would feel more at home in the republican party. Abe Lincoln, the first republican president, would probably have seemed very liberal by today's standards.
