McEwen Rejected by Voters 12 Years Ago: Blistering Repudation in 1993 Local News Column ("GET LOST")

This thread links to a blogpost which in turn excerpts a post-mortem column on the 1993 special primary election for the 2nd District (OH) Congressional seat. On the GOP side, Rob Portman won. Bob McEwen, who had lost in the Sixth District race in November 1992 under the cloud of the House Bank Scandal and extensive (and expensive) travel tastes, moved into the second district when the seat was vacated by the retiring Willis Gradison, and finished a somewhat-distant second.

The Enquirer columnist wrote what a lot of us hoped was McEwen's political obituary. But he's running again, even though for almost all of the past 12 years he hasn't lived here. A successful McEwen comeback in the primary could be bad news for the GOP in the special election on August 2 (the primary is in two weeks on June 14, and the Dem's most likely candidate looks strong). A McEwen August defeat would put egg on the faces of many high-level GOP and "moral" leaders who are backing McEwen.

If McEwen wins in August, we won't know whether he will represent the voters of the 2nd District or the myriad insider friends he has made during the past 12 years while he has lived in Metro Washington as a lobbyist, consultant, and investment banker.
