Hi Tony. I saw Voinovich's display last night and just cracked up. LOL. What the heck is wrong with him. What a pitiful attempt at gaining sympathy. We Ohioan's (even those who have moved on) know him too well to believe it was genuine, or else the guy has gone off his rocker.

I heard RINOvitch on the radio and could not believe my ears! He must be drinking the same koolaid as McQueeg, and it is sending him over the edge. I, too, am mystified at the RINOs here in Ohio. I am hoping that DeRINO's latest escapade will hurt sonny-boy Pat in the election. Pat DeWine is a lowlife snake who left his wife and young children for another woman. He also ran a very dirty campaign just last fall for county commissioner. Hope the sheeple here in SW Ohio realize that he is NOT a conservative and vote for either Brinkman or Schmidt.

Yeah, I agree. In fact, I have a Blackwell for Governor Ping list. I'm just talking. I would much rather have Blackwell as Governor. However, he WOULD make an excellent Senator as well.

Also when he couldn't stop Modell from moving the Browns to Baltimore...

But that's hardly the same as going all wobbly and weepy on the Senate floor over the very thought of John Bolton becoming ambassador to the U.N.!! For that matter, how much real impact or influence does a "lowly ambassador" have?! You'd think we were proposing to hand him the "football" or something...

GB, interesting "I must be the leader" theory...although I'm more inclined to agree with those who say something's gone wrong with George...some of his past behavior has been a little odd, but this latest goes far beyond anything I'd have expected...in fact, I find it inexplicable!

Good thread here, Dub...thanks for posting, and hopefully "to be continued"!

Some caller to Laura Ingraham just said "George Soros"...hmmmmmm

That happened when Mike White was mayor, of course Voinovich was governor at that time.

Yeah...I think I thought at the time though that White worked pretty hard to cut a deal with Modell, but Voinovich being the "chief of the whole state" declined to do much to aid our cause...and he could have, I think!! Instead, the "native Clevelander" shed a tear, said "so sorry, what a terrible thing for Cleveland!" and waved bye-bye to a storied franchise...

< / old bitterness >, but maybe GoBucks' theory is right after all...now George is in the U.S. Senate, he's certainly making himself heard from in Washington, and dissing/embarrassing his constituents back in his "fly-over state"...

Oh, btw..........can you put me on your Blackwell list?

We've already donated, and will continue to do so. I try to keep up with info (we get his e-mail), but being on your ping list would help.

He's already working on Gov. It would be too big a switch, and have the "mainstream" of the party against him.

Voinovich will be around 75 when his term expires in 2010. I think he just doesn't care because he will not be running for another term. (/speculation)

Family Group Blasts Ohio Senator for His Role in Recent Judicial 'Compromise'

By Chad Groening and Jody Brown
May 25, 2005

(AgapePress) - An Ohio pro-family activist says it may be time for Republican Senator Mike DeWine to come home. That observation comes in response to outrage being expressed in the Buckeye State over DeWine's participation in the recent bi-partisan "compromise" on judicial nominees.

After waiting more than four years for a vote, Priscilla Owen has been approved by the full Senate for the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The confirmation vote was 56-43, mostly along party lines. The vote brings to a close a long wait for the 50-year-old jurist who, since her nomination in 2001, had withstood nine hours of hearings, answered more than 500 questions, and endured 22 days of floor debate.

Owen is the first "beneficiary" of the controversial deal struck earlier this week by a coalition of seven Republican senators and seven Democrats. Under the arrangement, Owen and two other judicial nominees -- Janice Rogers Brown and William Pryor -- were to be granted an up-or-down vote before the Senate, while Senate Democrats were to retain the option of using the filibuster under "extraordinary circumstances."

Conservatives roundly criticized the arrangement, some describing it as a "betrayal" of those who helped to elect many of the Republicans involved in a pact that preserves Democrats' filibustering of President Bush's judicial nominees -- a tactic many consider unconstitutional. One of those seven Republican lawmakers is Mike DeWine of Ohio.

Phil Burress is president of the Cincinnati-based Citizens for Community Values. Burress says DeWine betrayed values voters when he joined other Senate Republicans in the deal. But the CCV spokesman says he was not surprised at DeWine's decision.

"What he does right now could very well end up affecting the nominations to the U.S. Supreme Court and trying to get judges on the bench who will interpret the Constitution rather than rewrite it," Burress says. "And Mike DeWine is right in the camp of those who are opposed to and fighting against what we believe in."

According to Burress, this is not the first time the senior senator from Ohio has supported an "anti-family agenda."

"Here in Ohio, Mike DeWine has been drifting to left over the last few years -- and I think he's finally gotten to where he wanted to be," Burress states. "He was supportive of the homosexual agenda by supporting hate crimes, and last year everyone was totally shocked when he came out against us in our amendment to protect marriage between one man and one woman.

"And now he's on the wrong side of the judges," the CCV spokesman adds, "so those who thought Mike DeWine was pro-family and pro-life, they have another thing coming."

Burress says he plans to meet with other pro-family activists in Ohio to discuss the senator's future. "We're already getting calls ... and e-mails saying it's time to bring him home," he says. "I think everyone knows, and they should have known for a long time, that whether they have an R or a D behind their name means absolutely nothing anymore."

DeWine is up for re-election in 2006. In 1994 he became the first Republican senator to represent Ohio in more than two decades. Six years later, he became Ohio's first Republican senator to be re-elected in almost 50 years.

I received this in the morning e-mail, evidently there are more than just FReepers that are upset with our elected officials.

I will actively work against Mike DeWine. If he makes it to the Senatorial election I will work against him there. There has to be a penalty for turning your back on the electorate.

In God We Trust…..Semper Fi!

so why the RINOism?

I think part of it is beltwayitis.(Columbus as well as DC). Even John Engler in his 3rd term went downhill.

Ohio is a very close state and getting closer.

The Kerry camp was nearly certain that they would win Ohio in 2004. The only reason they didn't was the organization put together by Karl Rove. It was a grass roots organization unlike any Republican organization in history.

The Bush campaign out canvased, out contacted, out hussled the Democrats by a huge margin and yet only won the state by 120 thousand votes out of 5.5 million.

You may recall that the presidential election hinged on who won Ohio. Bush won by 120 thousand out of 5.5 milion votes cast. That is quite close.

States that are very close almost always elect RINOs to office.

Consider that Voinovich did not campaign much at all in 2004 and won 63 percent of the vote. Bush campaigned in Ohio as much as any candidate in history. Bush had a large staff of paid and a huge staff of volunteer workers. He got just 51 percent of the vote.

Voinovich did not campaign with Bush in Ohio, he felt it would reduce his vote total. And it would have.

Anyone who thinks of Ohio as a conservative state needs to read the election returns. Most of the metropolitan areas are now totally controlled by Democrats. Cleveland, Akron, Toledo, Columbus, and Dayton are Democratic cities. Only the Cincinnati area retains a Democratic flavor

In very close states only RINOs normally get elected. If the Republicans run a Conservative, and the Democrats run a DINO the DINO wins big. If the Democrats run a Liberal and the Republicans run a RINO the RINO wins big. Only if the Demorats run a Liberal and the Republicans run a conservative does a conservative have a chance to win. Bu that is coin flip.

Nixon won Ohio twice. Nest Carter won Ohio, then Reagan won OHio twice. Bush 41 won Ohio once, and Clinton won Ohio twice. Now Bush has won Ohio twice. The odds say Ohio will go Democratic for Hillary in 2008.

Ohio is a swing state. And swing states nearly always elect RINOs and DINOS. If both parties run moderates a moderate is bound to win... Flip a coin. If the Democrats run a Lberal the the Republicans run a RINO, the Rino wins big. If the Republicans run a Conservative the the Democrats run a DINO, the DINO wins big. If the Republicans run a Conservative the the Democrats run a Liberal, the race is a draw.

I would urge you to watch the Governor's race in Ohio. Petro, Blackwell and Montgomery are running for the nomination for Governor on the Republican ticket. Petro is a RINO. Blackwell is quite conservative. Montgomery is in the middle. Even in three way primary race the middle of the road Montgomery is going to win.

That is Ohio. It is the way things are.

It looks to me that we disagree on Petro and Montgomery. Montgomery's positions are way to the left of Petro.

You do not take into consideration the election returns in off years.

The Dems only make it close in presidential years because they get money from the national party in presidential years.

Nope, just a RINO. He's from Cleveland and was MAYOR. If a Republican can become mayor of Commie Klevelandistan, he sure ain't no conservative

I think that it is a little more complex than this. As mayor, he was excellant (and yes, I live in Cleveland). As goernor, he was mediocre, at best. As a senator, he is a flop.

I think what we really have is a guy who is a poor administrator, but works well with individuals that he has had the opportunity to establish business and personal relationships with. As a life long resident of the Cleveland area, he was a long-time intimate familiar with the "movers and shakers" in the city, and was therefore able to operate effectively as mayor.

As governor, he had less opportunity and a lot less time to establish all of the personal relationships he seems to need to get things done in an effective manner, and consequently was a far less effective governor.

As a senator, he is WAY out of his league, since the relationships that are established in Washington are inevitably about getting something in return. I believe that he simply can't adapt his way of doing things to Washington, hence his inability to look like anything other than incompetant.

I think what you are seeing with his Bolton-related behaviour is the public representation of what happens to a guy who is used to being in charge and isn't any more, who is in over his head, is screwing up publically, and who knows it.
