Professor Timothy Shortell describes himself and others who share his beliefs "Übermenschen," a reference to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's idea of the perfect person, or "superman."
This nutty professor has called religious believers "moral retards" and compared religion to oppressive regimes. "Christians claim that theirs is faith based on love, but they'll just as soon kill you," Shortell wrote in an online journal that is linked to his Web site.
A firestorm erupted at Brooklyn College after the views of Timothy Shortell, who was elected to head the sociology department this month, were revealed in a Daily News story on Monday.
Professor Shortell calls the United States a "fascist state" and contends, "the megalomania of the ruling elite is paid for in working class blood." He accuses the Bush Administration of being Stalinists, writing "This is certainly the most fanatically ideological administration in U.S. history. What utter contempt they have for truth-telling and standards of professional behavior. If they weren't so incompetent it would be truly frightening."
He observes, "How cowardly are our current leaders. And cruel, too. Their superstitious beliefs will bring untold suffering to millions" and refers to President Bush as, "the war-criminal-in-chief."
Wishing our elderly well, Shortell writes, ""Luckily for America, old people die. If we can maintain our edge with young voters and hold on to those we've got as they get older, the right wing revolution will come to an end four years from now."
In a classic case of projection, Shortell writes, "Anyone who is concerned about the quality of American education ought to be worried about the political influence of fundamentalists. The damage they are causing to science education cannot be underestimated." But American education will be just fine in the hands of whackos like Shortell?
Brooklyn College officials have launched an investigation into the controversial professor's views. Brooklyn College President Christoph Kimmich wrote a letter to The New York News stating, "I sharply disagree with the offensive anti-religion opinions of Professor Timothy Shortell," .

Another soft-science America-hating idiot on campus. I'm shocked, SHOCKED!
You answered your own question with one word....ACADEMIA.
Is this guy aware of last century's 100,000,000+ body count caused by non-religious regimes?
Sociology is not a science. It is the easy-track to a college degree. The true/hard sciences, like chemistry, medicine, engineering, and molecular biology require competence in logic, math and a deeper level of thinking to pass muster. I can remember taking physical chemistry as a senior chem major and people from the biological sciences would routinely attempt the course only to flunk out in the first 6 weeks. Sociology majors never attempted the physical chemistry or even a freshman basic chemistry course.
Dope!
