In the 1992 Vice-Presidential Debate, Admiral James Stockdale, the running mate of billionaire Independent H. Ross Perot, began his opening remarks by asking two rhetorical questions, "Who am I and why am I here?" Not much else is remembered about the Stockdale candidacy, including the fact that he was a true hero of the Vietnam War, earning 26 medals and spending 7 years as a POW. His was a resume of genuine heroism most politicans would give their right arm for.
"Who am I? Why am I here?" are questions that Senate Republicans need to start answering soon. I'll give them a little help here: the answers are "a U.S. Senator serving in the majority party, which is the President's party" and "to keep the promises you made to the voters who sent you here." If the answers are anything different, it is time for the Honorables to start looking for another line of work.
Take Senator Voinovich of Ohio. Please....
