New York Sen. Hillary Clinton could rescue Terri Schiavo from her court-approved death sentence and demonstrate that she really does want to find "common ground" with the pro-life movement - but has so far gone into hiding over the case.
Were Clinton to make a statement saying she was "horrified" at the prospect of Schiavo's gruesome starvation-execution, and that the America she knows would never tolerate such abuse of a fellow human being, it would open the door for non-judicial intervention in the case - and dissipate much, if not most, of the potential opposition to such a move.
The former first lady has more than a little experience in forcing such issues. In April 2000, her handpicked attorney general, Janet Reno, supervised the machine gunpoint kidnapping of Cuban boat boy Elian Gonzalez in a bid to return him to his father.
Republicans were outraged - and even liberal constitutional experts like Alan Dershowitz and Lawrence Tribe argued that Elian's kidnapping was a gross violation of the Fourth Amendment.
But demands by critics that Congress hold hearings into the Gonzalez kidnapping were rejected by Republican leaders - including then-presidential candidate George Bush, who dispatched top aide Joe Allbaugh to the Hill to put the kibosh on any investigation.
By signaling that she wouldn't oppose the much less violent extraction of Schiavo from her hospice by either federal or state law enforcement - Sen. Clinton could show she really does have the respect for life that she claims.
Undoubtedly right-to-die advocates would rail about the gross abuse of power - just as Clinton critics did in the Gonzalez case. But with Mrs. Clinton's imprimatur on the rescue, their complaints would get nowhere.
Sen. Clinton is clearly conflicted on Schiavo's plight, declining to show up for the vote on congressional intervention last week and refusing to comment on the case ever since.
Now, with the Supreme Court turning thumbs down on Terri, the top Democrat may be her last hope.
If Hillary Clinton really does want to return to the West Wing one day, it's time for her to leave the shelter of the political sidelines and demonstrate some presidential-style leadership to save Ms. Schiavo.

What is this obsession with the "all powerful Hillary" now??? The MSM and Newsmax think that Hillary is the Senator in Chief now? Or is it just me? The Republican Senators are kissing her butt but lately. Since when did she become the goddess of the Senate?
The Marxist Medusa is deliberately hiding on this one -- the Death-O-Crats are something her "NEW IMAGE (to be)" can not tolerate. She also cannot be seen as being AGAINST THE DEATHOCRATS so her best (calculated as always) move is to just hide. Too bad we can't make it permanent.
If, like, one million people attend a Terri Schiavo memorial service, I predict Ms. Clinton will finally weigh on how tragic it is when your husband is a two-timing creep who couldn't care less if you live or die.
The left looks at all this more as a legal wrangle than the tortured state killing of a helpless and innocent woman. To the Left, this is all one game of legal outwitting and outmaneuvering the opponents(Terri's defenders).
Now where do you suppose Her Majesty stands in a "game" of this sort?
Thanks for the link. I've been lurking on the Dark Side - most Leftists don't want Hillary but will vote for her if it means NO REPUBLICAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE. But they would prefer Dean or Clark from the look of things. Mostly the MSM is pushing the Hillary thing.

Hillary and Chelsea were in Africa when the town of Zaire
were dying of STARVATION. Children laying in the dirt roads, no water, no food. Not even the scraps from their
plates went to those people. As they lay dying Chelsea was
haveing a party, her first political coming party and statement. One phone call and all of America would have opened up their pockets and food, water and medical help would have been their. Chelsea could only say to the young
people of Africa, "ALL THE YOUNG PEOPLE IN AMERICA ARE VIOLENT AND ON DRUGS"
If the Clinton wouldn't stop the starvation of thousands in Africa why would they want to save Terri?
Many wealthy people in this country today got there by putting their parents or family members in nursing homes that would abuse them and let them die, they were able to
take their homes and bank accounts and let their parents die. Since the law has changed and now it's not so easy to
sentence you parents or spouse to die by puting them into
mental institutions. {not the left,not the liberals, lets call them what they are} The Communist that call themselves
Demorats have been fighting for the right to die law,living wills. If Terri did have a living will why and how would she have signed it? Many people would be forced
into signing these wills. If Terri dies and these Commi Judges will give the Commi Dems just what they want, the
right to murder once again. It's not murder if a judge orders the death of a loved one. Terri's husband has the right to murder his wife as long as it's ordered by the courts. Pres.Bush needs to PARDON TERRI.
Hospitals are asking for living wills, donors and are refusing to give proper care to patients. Hospitals and
Doctors want body parts for the rich.
