I've just been skimming some of the coverage of the Schiavo case on the net and found a remarkably interesting sentence. The largest "liberal" blog on the internet (as if there are blogs elsewhere, I here the sarcastic readers cry), Dailykos, has a post entitled Schiavo splinters GOP.....
(Excerpt) Read more at freedominst.org ...
Sickening.
"Schiavo splinters GOP"
She does?? It looked like the Democrats were more splintered to me.
Wishful thinking. The votes in Congress say otherwise.
This is a country in crisis. If that girl dies, it's gonna be real ugly for the Democrats.
You could get DailyKos to say anything if you cut a check big enough. Just ask screamin' Howie Dean.
Gallup poll?? I'm talking about the vote in Congress...
More than anything else, the Terri Schindler story is the death of the mainstream (broadcast) media; they've failed completely in covering the landmark event of the year -- not because of the conventional drama of armies on the march, but because they have no language and emotion for communicating this story. It's not about ideology; it is about compassion. The story is not so much about Terri -- as it is about the different responses to the facts, and what people regard as the facts, from their own experiences and understanding of life. The subject herself is almost the perfect Rohrschach ink blot. It's ultimately not about Terri -- but about everybody else.
The best the mainstream media can come up with is their bogus polls, "As you may already know..." What a presumption; we don't know, and the more one knows, the less one could say that it is merely a matter of a right to die issue; it is a right to die versus a right to live -- and which should trump which. Apparently to a lot of liberals, the right to die should trump the right to live only in the case of human beings but should be inviolable in the case of anything else -- even trumping the right of any other species over that of a human, so confused are they, so determined to be "right." It's not about rights or who is right. It is about what is human.
The richness in the discussion of this is where the new media of interaction vastly surpasses their laughable polling feedback which is already so biased in their design and intent. The death of Terri Schindler was the death of the mainstream media to be a viable, credible part of American life. To the end, they insisted on telling the people, vastly more intelligent, informed and compassionate than they are, what to think and how empty it was to be them. They had nothing worth learning about -- to be a better human being.
Interesting comment. I also think it is accurate.
Who's this Terri Schiavo person I keep hearing about??
"or have the mainstream of the Democrat Party in the US become so cynical, and sickening, that they fail to understand that for some people, winning power is about defending and promoting your principles, and not just about remaining in power? "
That sentence doesn't apply to any Congressmen, none of which really care about Terri, other than how they can use her horrible situation for their political gain. Anyone who believes otherwise has had the wool pulled over their eyes. Politicians are always about power and re-election first.
In her own way, she's become a Joan of Arc, even a Jesus in the way she has forged a bond between many people -- who are receptive to that opportunity of expression. The people united behind Terri is quite a powerful, visceral human bond -- and there's nothing like it on the other side, just people soulessly going about their "duty." In the history of societies, there are rare moments like these that come quite unpredictably -- and change the course of that society's future. These are defining moments -- when it becomes very clear what developments are on the ascent and which lead to nothing but disintegration.
The liberal movement has nothing going for it; this was their last chance to validate their so-called vaunted compassion and they were completely absent from the discussion -- other than that it disturbed them so greatly seeing that others could still care. They assumed they owned the word, and knew what caring was about. And so their leading spokespersons are envious that somebody else should get so much attention. What about them? Yes, what about them?
Based on the various polls here -- should Congress act, should Jeb order protective custody -- and on the votes in the House and statements from leading Conservative commentators, the numbers seem to run about 75-80 percent in favor of the let her live option among the GOP. Those numbers are probably about reversed for the Dems. I doubt that the Republicans are any more split than the Dems, when you have a handfull from the Black Congressional Caucus backing the GOP measure.
Rush was saying the same thing. He claimed that the panic to kill this woman was disturbing .. and that people who wanted her to die were just salivating at the thought of the repubs LOSING this battle.
So .. I agree with you - this is political with the dems and they don't care if this woman dies - the dems just want to payback the repubs. If we just LOSE and FEEL BAD like they do - that's all that matters.
However, Rush warned them .. he believes this will backfire in their face - AGAIN - in 2006 - and it will put more repubs in the Senate - more repubs in the House - and an opportunity for Bush to get all his issues accomplished.
I tend to agree with Rush's opinions - not only because he knows how these people operate - but because I've noticed a very interesting thing about liberals -- they never look beyond today's self-gratification. They have no vision - and therefore, they do not look to the future to see what the repercussions of their actions might be.
The hate-Bush campaign caused them to lose the 2004 election .. but they didn't look beyond the DAILY bashing of Bush - and it came back to bite them.
