The late Leo Uris posed the question in Exodus and Armageddon - Is it in the Germanic zeitgeist to be anti-Semitic? I found much of what he had to say very compelling.

Gotz Aly sees antecedents for this in Hitler's policies that undercut a work ethic, running up debts that would have to be paid by others in the future. Hundreds of finely tuned laws were aimed at "socio-political appeasement." Thus was the foundation laid for the modern German welfare state.

Hitler's appeal to greed and sloth, to increase German prosperity without requiring Germans to work for it, led into the Holocaust because confiscating Jewish property seemed to make sense to the greedy.

I never really looked at from this angle, but there is some logic to it...

Back in college, I remember how a professor once explained Stalin's terror. He said the consequence of shooting 13 out of 15 regional army commanders is that there are now 13 army commands open. The survivors were literally catapulted up through the ranks. If you were a Soviet colonel in January 1938, on December you were either dead or a general. Terror creates lots of plunder to be handed out.

Think about the destruction of the Jews of Germany. How many professorships, law practices, medical practices, managerships, etc did that open up ?

If you think about it, one of the reasons the Germans had jobs when America was still in the depression. Lots of jobs open up when you get rid of book dealers, butchers, bakers, jewelers, street cleaners, etc.

You are also missing the point ,since what got us OUT of the Depression? The War -the massive rebuilding of the arms and other materiel required.But if you look at Europe -anyone could tell you that Poland etc. is very weak without Jewish brainpower and business.
Also,Germany was rebuilt by us (as was Japan)-to that effect they say a joke "that Israel decided that since whoever the US fights with they rebuild-like Iraq today-so Israel should fight US and they will be rebuilt!!!
The PM and Cabinet -upon further thought NOT to do it-since knowing their bad luck they might WIN !!

I was not trying to make a point. And yes, I knew the war got us out of the Depression.

With one key difference, Hitler was a National Socialist. Dems are Anti-National Socialist.
Well, not really that much of a difference. The channels change, but their story stays the same. They spread their lies, in their press brown shirts.

Is it in the Germanic zeitgeist to be anti-Semitic?

(1) You don't know what Zeitgeist means - maybe you are looking for Weltanschauung?

(2) All peoples tend to be suspicious/resentful/etc. of people who belong to a different group. Germans are no different.

Americans may be different because we have learned to live in a society where we assume that not everyone is like ourselves.

Unless you don't know Germans and their culture-I DO and I have read up on their history. This was not a suspicious against foreigners like we have against illegal aliens or the like. This was and is an inbred feeling against Jews -so much so that it didn't make any sense. They diverted needed materiel and trains from the front so Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen could have it -Are we talking about a "suspicion".
We are talking about deporting and killing people who were fighting for and maimed for the "Fatherland" as recent as the WW I -so this is not suspicion but ANTI-SEMITISM.
As for Zeitgeist, it's defined as " The taste, outlook, and spirit characteristic of a period or generation." So you are definitely right that it's a Weltanschauung-which is a world view .
