"I'm angry that AmeriCa's not angry, which they would be if there were a draft, which there isn't, so I'm angry about that, too!"
To: PJ-Comix
What's with the DUmmies always either misspelling AMERICA is some strange way or adding emphasis on letters?
AmeriCa (what the heck does that mean? Amer-California?)
Sheesh!

this is the fun part... i'll bring the beer.
Damn! Do these guys know how to party or what!?!
Imagine the celebration they'll have if a future 9/11-type event inspires those 18- to 20-year olds to enlist...

"spent many nights on the floors of churches and friends' houses prepping for actions or panel discussions etc."
Yet another euphemism for being a bum, aka homeless.
Is it me or are the quotes you get from DU getting progressively more derranged?

"Anybody out there know the break even point for a book? Just how many copies of a book have to sell before it starts making a profit?"
Impossible to say without having the book on hand. Everything from the number of pages to the CD-Rom you've mentioned to the cover art to the subject matter to the establishment of the author to the ad budget (a HUGE expense one can't simply assume ahead of time) affects the bottom line. Look in your bookstore--there's not even a uniform SIZE for books. There are estimates a publisher will make when it has a proposal describing the type, length and specs of a submitted book. You've mentioned a proposal before, and if it is done properly it will give an interested publisher something solid the appropriate department can budget based on in-house specs for that type of book (the editor can relay to those people the format he's envisioning for the book).

we're figuring things out. nothing wrong with that. gotta catalyze that's part of it. aufheben. the dialectic.
Sounds like that's a WiFi HotSpot, that cafe.
Aufheben: (past tense: hob auf; past participle: aufgehoben; noun: Aufhebung)
There is no adequate English equivalent to the German word Aufheben. In German it can mean "to pick up", "to raise", "to keep", "to preserve", but also "to end", "to abolish", "to annul". Hegel exploited this duality of meaning to describe the dialectical process...
The journal Aufheben was first produced in the UK in Autumn 1992. Those involved had participated in a number of struggles together - the anti-poll tax movement, the campaign against the Gulf War...

"What mindset makes a person bleep out "nigger" and not "wetback"? Do they feel one is sacred and the other isn't?"My thoughts also. Then I read that the author is black. And just what makes 'n*gger' less offensive than 'nigger'?

I don't often get angry when reading these DU threads (they usually make me laugh like everyone else) but this really got me -
Let's face it folks -- while seemingly most Amerikans are able to foolishly support the self-proclaimed "war-time president," they will NOT do so when little Jack and little Jill are called to serve their country along with the "trailer trash", the "wetbacks", the "n*ggers," and the rest of the "have-nots" things will change. And I say this as a Black American and a veteran.
What utter propaganda crap and how completely insulting to those he claims as fellow soldiers. He's basically saying that black servicemen and women are duped into serving, or have no other financial choice (as well as of course, white trash and hispanics and the poor) and that no one who is rich enough or smart enough ever serves. And by saying so, he's pretty much telling us there is no honor in serving.
If this yahoo were in the same room with me, I might try to take him, and I'm a girl. My grandfather was a warrant officer in the National Guard and finished his career serving under General Poindexter in the Pentagon, my uncle is also career NG, my brother served in the Old Guard under Reagan and then later in Bosnia, my father-in-law was in the Navy, my dad was in the Army, my sister is in the Air Force, my cousin is in the Air Force, my birth father was in the Navy, my brother-in-law is retired Navy (Lt-Commander) working in civilian capacity now for Centcom in Tampa.
And guess what, all of them, except my AF cousin who is Japanese (and not even a citizen yet, yet is serving his adopted country) and my sister who is half Chinese (BOTH of whom signed up AFTER 9/11 by the way), are white, and all are middle-class non-trailer-trash patriots, often college grads, who joined with both eyes wide open, not because they had no other choice, not because they were stupid (for example, my brother is now a senior program manager for Titan Securities) but because they wanted to serve their country.
UGH!

Still, you got to admit that that DUmmie understands the problem with the Democratic Party.

My daughter is now half blind and half deaf from injuries suffered in a grenade attack in Iraq serving honorably with what were the dregs of society according to this asshat.

I'm figuring that if 50,000 books (with CD-ROM) were printed up, then a sales figure of 20,000 at a $30 retail price would more than cover the expenses, including overhead.

I believe this one has fried his brain on drugs. He believes he is living back in the '60s.

This one confused me too. 38 is too young to have been active during the 60's or 70's, since he would have been born in 67. So even if he were to have been involved in some political action in his teens, we are talking about the 80's here. Spent the night on friends' floors doing what? Ecstasy?
