Back in the early to mid 1800's the Whigs and old Grandpop, to demoralize leading Democrats, to persuade the Democrats that the campaign was going badly, sent out a letter to that effect supposedly written by some high party muckety-muck. Another of his tricks involved the printing up of phony ballots; the ballots mixed up the names of Democratic and Whig electors, which was intended to confuse voters. Cool, eh.

I tell you, they just don't make campaign dirty tricks the way they used to. Using phones and faxes and planted operatives removes that personal touch.

Yeh, I hear that, way back when, old Grandpop was raised with a dubious old adage engraved into the maple of the headboard of his bed. Instead of something nice and benevolent like "do unto others .....", he had written there for him to remember, "Unethical behavior, especially acts undertaken to destroy the credibility or reputation of a political opponent are a good thing."

;-)
