The man is driving down the road and stopping ahead of the kids. Who are screaming in fear as the cars race by. The kids would get near the car and the man would speed away and then stop. Making them catch up to him again.
Well, my dad and uncle Bobby see this happening and I see this happening and my dad looks at uncle Bobby and uncle Bobby says to my dad "get those kids, I'll be right back".
So my dad runs down to where the kids are and they are still screaming while their parents (their mother was in the car too) are a bit down the road, stopped. My did picks up the screaming kids and brings them up the driveway. I glance into the garage and see uncle Bobby putting something against the wall.
My dad is calming down the kids as their father stops at the end of the driveway and jumps out the car. He starts cussing at my dad who had a look on his face I had never seen before.
The next thing I see is uncle Bobby and I quickly figure out what he had in the garage. He was carrying a rifle and he steps up to the guy and shoves it into his belly. At that point the guy shuts up. My dad is just staring at him with another look I had never seen before.
The rifle my uncle has is a lever action and he pulls the lever down and then up in single quick move with one hand. Uncle Bobby says to the man in a low voice "Tell me you will never do that to those kids again or I'll pull the trigger". I thought the man would pee his pants but he looks right back at uncle Bobby and says exactly what uncle Bobby told him to say. At this point my mom and my aunt and the other women come out of the house. They all stop, look and seem to understand what was going on.
The man backs away, collects his kids, gets in his car and slowly drives away. Uncle Bobby and dad look at each other. Dad asks "is that loaded" and uncle Bobby says "heck, I don't even have bullets for it".
It was on that day that I first learned what evil is. In the years that followed I'd learn that we have what I call devoids on the Earth. People that look like people but are not. Best you never meet one.
Met a lot of them over my time and never minded it at all. In fact I always enjoyed dealing with them even when it was on their terms. But then, like General Mattis I'm a Marine too and I understand and am willing to do what needs to be done.
Semper Fi General.
