As I was telling another Freeper my best friend was West Point class of 1939. We met while I was in the Army together in the early 1950's... and we became close friends for life. He passed away a few years ago. He knew Patton from his youth since his own Army officer Father was an old friend of George Patton.
Anyway, he was a gun collector of some re-known when he retired in the late 1960s due to health concerns. He had a couple of M1 s in various states of repair and said they really were HIS favorite weapon... he and I BOTH agree they were RELIABLE and thanked God Almighty they were so.
My friend often quoted General Patton and we used to laugh because he didn't say... GREATEST DAMNED BATTLE IMPLEMENT EVER DEVISED.... when descring the M1. And, yes.. according to my friend George Patton could and would cuss a blue strak at the drop of a hat... even when he wasn't a General. But he was a gentleman and a scholar.... really was a Renaissance man and Warrior.
